How do you get around...

Recommended Posts

Alright. Hear me out on this. I know a lot of you guys/gals might have come across this problem before. Here's a bit of background for you; in the Marine Corps, we have this stupid new rule, that states; all ATV riders will provide all documents that legalize their ATV in their state of residence. To include, the title and registration. (No i'm not a Marine, I just have to go by their rules).

So here is my thing. The state that I will be moving back to is Ohio. So I would like to get my shee registered in that state. They say that in order to get it registered in the state. I need a title. I bought the bike used, with no title. The bike had already been powder coated once, so where is the VIN? So if there is no VIN, and no title, what do I do?

I know somebody has come across this also. Any help will be greatly appreciated!

What I had to do is, take my bike to the dmv and show them the bike so they could register it for me and and give me a new vin. I also did it with a pic for the drag chassis I had to register. Call the dmv, tell them the bike was bought out of state and that state doesnt require the bike to titled, so you need to know what to do to get a title. Good luck

hey Doc,

I dont know who has told you that you have to prove that you are the rightful owner of the bike, the Corps cant make you prove anything. It's not a street ridin machine so they cant do anything about it. Until the police come to them and say that you have a suspected stolen bike, there is no reason they need that info.

As far as getting a titles. would you happen to know how to get ahold of the guy that owned it before you? A bill of slae might work but you would need who evers name was on the title

if its used why worry about it? the title and papers for it are long gone and prolly passed around from person to person. are they gonna come to your house and look for it? if not, fuck them. i wouldnt register shit. ive never registered any used bikes ive gotten. no one is gonna track down an atv worth a few grand.

Do you mean the vin# is completely sanded off, or just powdercoated over?

I mean that it is Powdercoated over. I am not sure though. The frame has been lightened. So could it have been cut out??

You sure your buddy didnt fabricate that frame for you custom?

It is custom. I am just not sure "how" custom.

These are the new rules of the Corps. They have these things now that EVERY person who owns a motorcycle, dirt bike or atv have to be a part of. They call them "Motorcycle Clubs". Every single unit in the Corps is supposed to have one now. In order to be a part of it, you have to fill these forms out. On the form it is asking me for my info. I am not shitting you. I know it's BS.

So I asked some questions and did some research today. Even though I can not get around the Motorcycle Club, I can try to get around the registration. I guess the ATV association in Ohio states that you have to register if you plan to use the ATV on any public land owned by the state. If you plan to use the ATV on privately owned land ONLY. Then you do not have to register at all.

So here is the new dilema. I have an asphalt quad. Are drag strips private property?

By the way. Thanks for helping me out on this guys!

It may be just powdercoated over to where you can't see it. The vin is stamped into the main frame where the gear shifter is, so to my knowledge it couldn't be cut out.

As far as the drag strip, I can't say for sure but more than likely any strip you go to would be a privately owned place.

Even after the VIN is powdercoated over you should still be able to get it off the bike, you might have to scratch the powedercoat but it is definately there. If it's not, somebody's trying to hide something.

That aside, if you can't get a title here in NJ a notarized bill of sale is also acceptable. I just typed one up in word with the VIN, vehicle type, seller's name, etc. and then have the seller sign and notarize it. Usually this is done before the sale is made. If you have a bike and forgot to do this(I'm not advising you to do this, but I have heard of people doing this), first go down to DMV run the VIN and make sure it's not stolen. If it is your fucked. If it's not get a buddy to right you out a bill of sale like he sold it to you and notarize it and you should be straight. Like I said, I don't reccomend commititing fraud, which is what that is.

Otherwise good luck tracking down a title. ATVs get passed around so much the titles usually get lost or are never issued. I've never bought a bike with a title, and unless the bike is almost new I very very rarely see it around here anyway.

I agree on both counts, unless the strip is at a fairgrounds or something which might be county land. The VIN is on the frame on the LH side just below the case, it's also on the case just below the LH carb...needless to say they oughta match. NM has the same shit at the DMV, no title no reg, I jumped through a few hoops trying to get one on one of mine and struck out so fuck 'em I'll keep my thirty bucks every three years or whatever it is.

most states that have an atv registration program will also have an "out of state trail pass " for riders from out of state who visit to ride the trail system . I live in WI , but will not register it either . just another way for "the Man " to keep tabs on me . I just buy new out of state trail passes . If you do get pulled over for a sticker check the trail pass is just as good as a registration sticker . BUT where it may get complicated is when they ask to see your drivers liscense , last time I just said that the quad belonged to my dad and I was jusst using it for the weekend ! worked like a champ !

I thought that most drag strips would be privately owned.

So the packet that I need filled, looks kinda like this;

VIN number ____________________

Regristration (where required) _____________________

Insurance (where required) _____________________

So i'm going to hope to print out the Ohio state laws and carry them on me. Hopefully this will work because Ohio is where my drivers liscense is from.

Thanks for the help on the VIN look up on the bike. I'll go locate it and get it off of there. By the way, the motor in the bike is not the original motor. So should I grab both numbers? Probably just incase somebody grabs up my bike and tries to part it huh?
