abcd9906
Hello All. Thanks for looking. I got this banshee last week from a guy that took really good care of it. I traded a salvage title CBR1000 for it that he plans on putting the motor into his other banshee frame. ANYWAYS - I need advise on what fluid to put back into the bike. He said he has some syntetic 10w40 in there now. Personally, riding harleys for years I think it needs something a little thicker, but I don't know. What do you suggest. My concerns are that I was out in the dunes buy the river and ran close to empty on fuel. I still had some left but not enough to get me back. I used another guy pre mix that he had and now im finding out that - that is a no no. The bike has always used Castor 927 and VP 110. This guy had 91 and Lucas Semi-Synthetic 2 stroke oil in his. His was mixed at 40:1 and mine has always had 36:1. Will the 2 different oils in there cause me trouble? Should I drain it all or should I start running the Lucas since its already in there now? HELP! Next is that in nuetral it idles pretty decent. Once in first and warmed up if i pull up next to someone and hold my clutch in the bike bogs down and dies pretty fast within 30 seconds or so even if i try to throttle it up it acts as if its being choked out. Any help on this from someone. Its like its still under load or something. as long as im moving it runs like a striped a$$ ape though. The motor I was told is bored and polished. I dont know how big because I havent had it apart and he said he didnt remember but that it hasnt been sleeved or anything. It was the second bore and overhaul. He has had sometiime playing with it and its running good now. Should I go ahead and re-ring it and get it honed or wait till it stops running good on me? How do I know when its time to do an overhaul on the top end? Next I heard that you are supposes to replace your reeds every season? True? This bike has brand new V-Force 3 on it and damn that will be expensive to replace every year. Anyways thanks in advance to all the experts out there. If it works I will enclose a picture of the bike. Also, rings and cylinder honing every year or 10 hours? true?
abcd9906
Sorry it also has a decked head, boost tube (why are they pointless) the theory behind it sounds legit? Different gears, Toomey T-5's ... 330 main jet is all he told me that he could remember. The bike is a 1991.
jbooker82
#1. Transmission Fluid. The oil that you change in the banshee is only for the transmission. It doesnt lubercate any of the engine parts. Yamaha says to use yamalube 10W30. A oil desigend for 2 stroke transmissions is best. Bel Ray Gear Saver 80w is good stuff. Make sure you get a straight weight. You dont want 80w-90 that is a hypoid gear oil for differentals. #2 The different oils wont cause you any problems just try to stick to the same mixture and oil. I would be more concerned with you putting 91 Octane fuel in your banshee when the Previous owner ran VP110. Ethire the previous owner was wasting his money running that high octane fuel, or it was build to run it. If it was built to run 110 your probably going to be detonating. If it does it long enough you will have a blown up banshee. #3 Check the clutch adjustment. It might be out of adjustment and not releasing all the way. #4 You need to buy a good compression tester. A Craftsman would be a good one to get. I wouldnt go any cheaper on the tester. Do a compression test. Keep records, Looking for any sudden drop in one cylinder. Both cylinders should be pretty close. I usually test my banshee 2 times a year. Once at the begining of riding season, and once half way through. #5 No you dont have to replace your reeds every season. You will know when you need to replace them. When they crack and break usually the cylinder does dead and doesnt run. You can also buy replacement petals instead of buying the whole new reeds with cages. #6 No you dont have to rering it every 10 hrs. Go by what your compression tester says. Looking for big drops or uneven cylinder readings. josh
05.Banshee.SE
Flush the coolant. Run Enging Ice in her. Grease all the zerks you can find. Clean and lube the chain. +1 on Gear Saver. Find out the compression and post it back here. Should do pretty good.

Although opinions vary on oils, I use Chevron 80W90 in the tranny with no probs, if I was to recommend an oil it would be Bel-Ray Gearsaver though. I definitely agree about the fuel/oil mix though, it will run like dog shit if it was built for higher octane fuel, and the jetting will also be affected by the different mixture; drain the old and go with your own fuel/oil mix. Just to add to #4 & 6, a general rule of thumb is test your compression and anything under 100psi or 10% difference between cylinders means its time for a topend...technically you could just re-ring and hone the cylinders but in my experience it's not really worth it unless you're strapped for cash (just bore to the next size and get new pistons). Good luck.
abcd9906
My compression is 153 left and 157 right. I kicked over each side 5 times and tried to keep the same amount of force for each kick on each side. The motor is a duncan racing engine. Anyone familiar with these? Had a guy at work offer me his 2006 yzf450 and a thousand for my banshee. Almost tempted me, but I like my banshee so far even though ive only had it for a little while. the sound of a two stroke and power of this machine just do it for me. Maybe im done for not trading. he said his yzf450 would eat me for lunch ...... I havent had a chance to race him yet. to be continued ... 05 banshee
 Funny , somebody wanting to trade something sooo fast for something slow. I hate to talk smack on a new banshee owner, but he may be waaaaay to anal to own a banshee. worrying about using 40:1 to get back out of the trails after running out of gas? Come on, man. Stop worrying about it so much. Getting you back was the purpose of the fuel you borrowed. If you want to make sure you have race fuel in it, drain it out and move on. Put the fuel in the weed wacker. 1 year or 10 hours? Man I would feel bad if I only put 10 hours on my banshee in a year.

I wasn't concerned with the ratio as much as I was concerned with the fact that I had or may have two differnt types of oils in the same tank. I've heard it can gel up and not provide the needed lubrication and possibly seize up. certain oils I know you can mix with no trouble. I was wondering if anyone knew which ones couldnt intermix and if the lucas 2- stroke oil is worh a f*ck or not. Should I keep using it - should I go back to the castor 927 - which oil is preffered by most? Will lucas and castor together cause a problem? I know that on the back of the Amsoil bottle is says DO NOT mix with Castor. Big red letters. Lucas had no warning on the back. I just wanted to make sure. Id prefer to use amsoil in everything I own but I dont know the proper procedure to change it all out and make sure all the old castor is out of the bike completely. I put at least 10 hours alone on it last weekend is why I was wondering if i really has to re-ring it already. That would sure become a pain in the a$$ and the pocket book. If they are that much of a hassle to maintain I may consider the yzf450
