Wildcardracing
well i dont mean to hijack the thread but how do you guys feel abouth the standard bore wiesco's? i had my cylinders dune ported by herr jugs and ordered a set of standard bore wiesco's. will they be ok to run? i realize that i need to take measurements but herr jugs said that the bore and taper in the cylinders was good. oh and he also threw a fresh hone on the cylinders for me. They are just as good as the overbore wiseco's. You should be good, just be sure to double check your clearances.
b00sted
you dont want one cylinder bored at a different spec than the other. if so get them bored the same size. then get the pistons you want. That's incorrect. You obviously don't want to run a stock bore piston in one hole and a .020 over piston in the other. But you definitely want the machinist to bore the cylinder and hone it to fit each particular piston. Especially in a high performance application. GOOD machinists won't touch a motor unless they have the pistons in hand. If some machinist is going to bore your big dollar setup without having the pistons to mic and match, you should probably take your stuff and leave. b00sted
Sorry but I feel the need to chime in here... I also ABSOLUTELY HATE shops that won't do work unless the parts are purchased through them, and if I ever get that I never go back. I've had that experience more so with a 91 Mustang GT that I own. You ever get the bullshit line, "It's like going to restaurant and bringing your own steak." Sometimes I feel like saying, "If I can buy a prime cut of beef cheap and have a professional cook make the thing perfect then what the hell is wrong with that?" I know the reason they say it is because they make money off parts but regardless it's poor business practice. My buddy runs a speed shop. Overhead is pretty high, profit margins aren't exactly great, and the market sucks right now. Making the extra few bucks off the parts helps alot. Although he'd never turn anyone away for buying their own parts, he definitely prefers they buy stuff through him. Plus there's always the problems with guys ordering the wrong stuff, and then it turns into a huge nightmare because they have to return the stuff themselves(usually ship it back to where ever, wait for the new part to ship back, etc.). But then again, he will also beat Summit/Jeg's pricing, so the guys really have no reason to buy it somewhere else when they can get it quicker/cheaper through him. If they are willing to match the price and aren't too pushy about you buying from them, then I see nothing wrong with that. Like I said, I know shops make a lot of money off parts it's just when they refuse to work on your machine due to you getting parts elsewhere, that is when I get irritated. I also understand what you mean though when you mentioned ordering wrong/incorrect/defective parts because that is a hassle. I ordered a pair of performance shocks for my Mustang once and one of the bushings was missing. It turned into a huge deal because the car was already up on the lift with the old shocks ripped out and I had to run around to a bunch of automotive stores trying to find this bushing. The mechanic was a little pissed but I don't blame him there.
