rtcc
Was riding yesterday and was sliding around a downhill gravel turn and I here a POP! I though I had broke a tierod end but when I came to a stop I realized the whole damn spindle broke. I luckily have a full spare set but its kinda scary. Cause I dont know how you are supposed to check for stuff like that. pics.

rtcc
Thats the thing, it was a lucky break. I had been hauling ass all day long on some rocky stuff and then going down the road in second gear and bam. The rim didnt even fall off all the way, the caliper held it on, so it was very uneventful really, but still scares me when I think of what else I had been doing that day. sinisterboo
I see in your pic u have positive offset wheels, that may have a little to do with it. And check that rotor to make sure its not bent.
FireHead
BenBB, one of the members on here has broken a couple of them, but he desert races pretty hard. I don't think a broken spindle is very common. :geek:

I agree there, actually look at the caliper backing plate even closer, mine got tweaked pretty hard when the first one broke, just exactly where yours did but I was going through a long set of whoops...wound up upside down in a fuckin' thorn bush lol! The second one broke in the cast upright just above the spindle shaft, snapped clean and was still working ok (I wasn't pushing it hard just preriding the course) but making a strange clicky noise. Really wierd but both were stockers on my '96 so I'm sure they had some miles on 'em. You're one of very few I've ever read or heard about breaking them so I think chances are good it prolly won't happen again...and better on the side you're replacing  I swapped mine for YFZ450 spindles which are aluminum but still have the steel shaft so they may or may not last better (hope so); had to use 450 hubs though they won't interchange  I haven't raced since last year so I haven't had a chance to really torture test them ::
rtcc
Well I know one thing, the last time I rode was at the dunes and there was some SERIOUS whoop sections and we hit those ALL the time. As fast as I could. So 5 days of hitting really hard whoops might have done something to them, or could just be a coincidence. Either way they are both getting replaced! inthemail
yeap. clean break. i have snapped many a 14mm bmx axle like that. when metal shears like that its usually fairly unexplainable at the moment but your right, hitting hard whoops repeatedly and rocks and shit probley overstressed it. glad to see you typing this out and not taking pictures of bruises and cuts first haha when you remove your balljoints, make up a rig like this itll make it a snap. ------no pun intended Edited June 5, 2008 by inthemail
shee4202
Hey all, This may be a stupid question, but does anyone know why the two bolts that fasten the steering knuckle portion of the spindle are welded? I've got a broken weld on one of the bolts and was wondering if they absolutely need to have the bead of weld on there. Thread lock and/or a lock washer wouldn't be sufficient enough.
