Gearing

Hi guys... just thought I'd ask the pros here a question...

 

I really like the way my bike is running, but it seems the gearing may be too narrow, not wide enough. I am running stock gearing. I have 22 inch tires on the rear, and it just seems like the bike can be widened out a little more in the gears/sprockets. Jump up a tooth or two in the front maybe? I know you guys know your stuff!!!

 

With my mods... what do you think. The bike has a serious set underneath the seat and is a real joy to ride, just want to widen it out a little.

 

I will also be porting it... an agressive/high port job since I mainly climb hills and dune around. I'll drag the bike here and there too.

 

It seems like my 1st gear is just not even there... I barely move with it. But that's besides the point as I hardly use it other than pulling out. But what do you guys think? With my mods, and my riding style, what would you guys do?

 

What is a very popular combination on a 'shee? For saying duning, hillclimbing, racing around, etc. with 22 inch tires?

i would get a 15 tooth for the front. they are pretty cheap so give it a try

im running 15/41 with 22's andc i like it. much less shifting. probably what will happen is instead of never using first, youll not use 6th very often unless your on gas saving mode or just haulin ass.

what tires do you run? most guys run 20" tires in the dirt.. maybe 22's for sand. what kinda riding are you doing the most of?

 

yea 15/41 gearing is fairly tall, especially if you are running 22 tires. Unless you do a lot of road/fire road riding, stuff like that, 22" rears with tall gearing can be a pain, IMO

thats just it. most of my riding is fast wide open trails or logging roads. it doesnt really bother me in the tight stuff though. only one rough tight trail its too fast for, but it was like that before too. now i just use first instead of second in the tight stuff

Get 20" tires for starters then try a 16/41 or 17/41 depending on how much power your bike has. My friend runs 20's with 16/41 and I run a 17/41 on 18" tires. It really depends on how much power your bike puts out but try a 16 front with 20's trust me you'll like it

I am running GBC Dirt Devils. I hillclimb alot, and run the bike off the line here and there to keep the guys and their thumpers quiet lol

 

But mainly hillclimb in the coal hills around here, and dune/race around

I need to find a 20" tire that is rough and won't wear down. My bike spits out some horses... well not compared to some of the machines you guys run, but it is fairly modded and can run. I run 22's mainly because they are 6 ply and seem to climb hills better.

 

BUT if I can find the right gearing, and a 20" tire that can take abuse from banshees on hard packed dirt, I will run it.

 

I was thinking the IRazr 20"... but please, feel free to tell me differently! I love the input from you guys. Thanks a bundle

i hear i razrs wear super fast, and they dont have big knobbies to start with. they look badass though

 

They do. I personally see 450's and banshees tear razrs and razr 2's to shreads... but the IRazrs seem to wear nice on powerful sport quads. They are 20"

 

Any other advice on gearing or 20" tires guys for these awesome, one of a kind machines?

There is absolutely no miracle tire for a banshee it will chew whatever tire you buy to shreds my rule of thumb is never go over 20" for stability reasons and stay away from heavy 6 ply tires and stay off the pavement. I really like the kenda dominator they are cheap and are just like a holeshot.

I like my Knarly's for hard packed dirt so far. They are 20" tires which is nice as well. Don't get me wrong, I can understand what you are saying about the 22" tires for hill climbing. I used to run 22" rears as well and they worked good for hills. However the 6 ply's did get fairly heavy, and if you do a lot of fire road running, etc they will balloon pretty bad and usually shake the crap out of the quad.

 

I too would recommend some sort of 20" tires, and then just change your front and or rear sprocket around.

those gnarly's look like they chew. I have had to screw with gearing and tires drag racing ported 450's on dirt and I find the best way to win is run tall gearing and 20's and low air pressure. 16/41 for 20's is a perfect setup for blasting the 4-jokes with rocks if you ask me

so those tires arent just a crappy knock off? ive been tempted more than once to give them a try. for 75 bucks a peice they arent much less than my knarlys were though
