nick t
ok i bought my 03' banshee a few months ago. i drove to KY to pick it up. when i got there the guy told me that he didnt have the title because in KY ypu can only get one as the first owner you cant pass it on. i thought it seemed fishy but the guy i took with me (who i thought new a lot about this shit) said it was no big deal. i figured if the guy was lying oh well i wouldnt need the title unless i need plates which i wont. is this bad? what should i do? thanx for any info/advice

dajogejr
See if there is VIN numbers on the frame, motor, etc. Have the police run them. Problem is, if it comes up stolen....they very well might want the bike back. I have an old 87 to 89 J arm frame drag bike... A title never even crossed my mind. The fact you showed up there and the guy didn't mention that prior is kinda shitty...to be honest. It doesn't matter where you bought it from, it matters where you're gonna ride it. See what your regulations are for registering the vehicle, if you need anything to get an off road sticker (if you even need them) or even if you want to get insurance for it.... For example. Here, you need an ORV sticker AND state pass sticker to ride our trails and dunes....but you go to a store with your drivers license or state ID to buy the ORV sticker, they no longer do it at Secretary of State (our version of DMV) like they used to. However, for piece of mind, if you're riding somewhere and the sheriff, etc., pulls you over and is having a very bad day, he might run VIN numbers, etc. So...take that with a grain of salt.... 2001Stroker
Up until 2006, here in Virgina, no off-road bike, moped, tractor, utility 4-wheeler, or sport quad were issued a title or registration. They passed a law in 2006 that mandates everything made after 2006, with an internal combustion engine, has a DMV title. It's not uncommon to buy something used, and not have a title. Like NYUK said, get a Bill Of Sale. It can be hand written, but it looks better typed. It must include Year, Make, Model, VIN, Color, Engine Serial Number and Displacement, and both the seller's and buyer's Full Names, Addresses, Phone Numbers, and maybe even SSN's. Get personal info from a picture ID. Thay way, if you buy it and you check it through a police department, and it comes back as stolen, that person can be tracked down, they can be prosecuted criminally and you can sue civilly for your money back. It's best to check it for stolen before you buy it, though. The only thing that the police need to run it through NCIC is Make, Model, and VIN. I wouldn't sweat not having a title, because alot of states didn't make it mandatory.

Just call the police non-emergency number. They should be able to do it on the phone. If it is stolen, the police will impound it, and give it back to it's rightful owner, and take out criminal charges on the guy that sold it to you. That's when you sue. Since you are acting on "good faith", and asking if it is stolen, then if it is in fact stolen, you will not get in any trouble.

jamebo
Here in Fla we are required to have a title with a sticker on the quad. I bought an '01 Warrior in 2004 without a title and to put it in my name I had to pay taxes and title fees. I think they said that all quads are supposed to be titled since '03 by law here. Had to give the bill of sale with VIN #'s at the tag agency. If you ever get in any hot water on your quad here the sticker is usually the first thing they want to see.... JasonsBanshee
Kentucky does have titles and they should come with the bike. My concern here would be unless you got a notorized bill of sale what if he has the title and reports the bike stolen? If he knows where you came from that would help him screw you too. Then you'd have a huge mess on your hands. It's sad but there are people out there like that. I won't buy a bike without a notorized bill of sale or title. I really preffer titles. I've always had them notorized. You need a witness of some sort such as a notor.
