Isaac_62
Guys, I have done everything the clymer has told me to do from disassembly to assembly. I split the cases to put a 4 mil crank in. Now i cant get the transmission to cooperate. I am doing the shifting test and I cant get the trans to shift from 1st to 6th without me helping it (spinning gears in trans). If i get it all the way to 6th it wont go down to first and visa versa. The trans was just fine before i took it out for the cleaning and new crank. has anyone ever had this trouble. I can get it to all gears if i aide it. Should i just finish assembling and run it? what could be causing this. the shift forks are in good condittion and all parts are there. I have adjusted the little screw so i think thats correct. Nothing is binding and the gears turn correctly while in the case. Ialso noticed that if i dont spin the trans that it sometimes wont go into gear. What do you guys think?
theshee
Have you adjusted the shifter? Also, it should be fine, that shit will be turning when you are riding so it should be ok, but its hard to say without seeing in person. My 421 was the same way, ran the shit out of it and never had a problem.

I believe your problem is lack of oil. that and the fact the trans has to be rotating to work properly. put it together it will work fine. Fireroad Express
i did the same thing the first time i put mine together. spent hours futzing with the adjustment screw trying to get the trans to shift 1 to 6 and back down again. i ended up adjusting it the best i could and putting it together. it works like a top and shifts flawlessly. no worries! Screaming Yellow Zonker
Mine was the same way when I installed my 4mm. whats going on is the flat squares in the gears won't line up until they are turned in the right position. You have no problem. Just first timer nerves.
ClimbAnyHill
You gotta have her moving in order to shift. Go Ride!
dajogejr
as long as you use a little common sense putting it back together, and used the clymer to adjust everything, you'll be fine. If you're really concerned...torque down the counter shaft sprocket nut. Use a drill at a low speed setting to turn it...and click through gears. Remove the spark plugs if the top end is on... Yes, you must twist the transmission drive or driven shaft in order for the gear teeth & drive dogs to align. Sounds like you are right on track.
