Snopczynski
I am under the assumption that flux core penetrates rather well, but has alot of carbon deposits in the weld from the shielding put on the wire. As far as the box store welders, lincolns small 115v setups are great welders for the $450 and up range. I have a weld pak 3200 hd now and it works pretty dame awesome with mig on 1/4" steel. rubberneck
what is tig welding?? sorry for the threadjack.... but it seems alot of you are pretty knowledgable on this.is there a welder that does all from regular farm mechanic stick welder (for the big heavy broken shit) to popcans. i actually have seen someone weld a popcan before im pretty sure it was tigged. you need a tig welder to do aluminum correct? cannot be done with a mig wire feed? Actually you can do wire feed aluminum if you have a spool gun. I have one, dont use it much. To get those really pretty welds that look like a roll of coins that have been spread out you need to TIG. TIG stands for tungsten inert gas. Also known as GTAW gas tungsten arc welding. Im not sure if there is one welder that does everything. It seems like with everything else, you start out with one and then they multiply. lol I just bought a miller dynasty 350dx. It is a tig welder and you can stick weld with it. It will weld from 5-350 amps. I have seen the soda can trick, and that is TIG welding for sure. I also have a millermatic 210 mig welder. To be honest, I think if you are only going to buy 1 I would get a good mig welder. Easy to use and can do a variety of welding for you. Plus it is just so much faster. A lot of heavy stuff like farm equipment gets the good old stick welder. The advantage is good penetration and you dont have to worry about welding outside in the wind like you would with a gas shielded process. Im no expert, thats for sure still learning everyday. One thing for sure is it is an enjoyable hobby, and very rewarding at least i find it to be.
racer
what is tig welding?? sorry for the threadjack.... but it seems alot of you are pretty knowledgable on this. TIG, tungsten Inert Gas, GTAW, Gas Tungsten Arc Welding, same things. It mean you use an electric arc torch with a nearly non-consumable electrode to produce a weld pool. You can either fuse the material by melting the two base metals into each other or by using a filler rod. The beauty lies in the fact that since the electrode isn't deposited into the pool (unlike MIG or Stick) you can weld damn near anything with little to zero contamination of the weld pool. This is particularly nice when welding touchy materials like Ti, Al, Mg, CrMo (which can also MIG'd with varying degrees of success). The weld pool is also infinitely variable in depth, unlike MIG and stick. So you can control depth of penetration pretty easily.
racer
One thing for sure is it is an enjoyable hobby, and very rewarding at least i find it to be. I love to weld, I find it very relaxing. It's profitable in it's own right as well. Most of the shit that breaks around my house is because of a bad weld by either me or the factory, so now I have the ability to fix 'em right up.
