ever save someone's life?

.

Recommended Posts

just got back from the hospital and need to vent a little.

Mother in law walked in the door, was walking toward the dining room and half passed out falling into a hard asthma attack. Her inhaler was dead and she couldnt get reupped until tomorrow. My wife sat her down and by the time we got the nebulizer and medicine for it she was slumped down off the couch and not breathing. at which point my wife called 911

My wife got the nebulizer running while I was laying her down and by this time her heart stopped as well. I took the nebulizer piece and started giving her cpr through it delivering some medicine as well. Gave her 5 compressions and 2 more breaths and she started half breathing again (if you ever saw someone having an asthma attack you know the kind of breathing I mean). And at this point she had a pulse again.

At which time the police showed up and got everything going while I moved the coffee table and 2 other chairs out of the way to clear more room for everything. I've never seen a response like this show up to anything, 5 cop cars, 2 ambulances and a total of 10 or so people at my house within 2-3 minutes of calling. I gotta give them credit for that. She takes all sorts of medicine, so I was trying to round stuff up so they knew better what they were dealing with. They sent my wife out as soon as the police got there because she was hysterical.

Here's the kicker, after all this (a matter of 5-7 minutes at most), I could finally get my 2 year old son off the couch and take him downstairs to watch tv in the play room. My 6 year old daughter ran up to her room so she didnt see much (unless she was at the top of the steps half looking.) My neighbor had a stroke about a month ago, and got took away in an ambulance and never came back. First thing my daughter asked when we got home was if her nana was coming back. Thats hard.

She's alright now, and stabilized. Last time and only time I took a cpr class was 6th grade (30yrs old now), and it comes back to you like you were taught yesterday. My nerves are racked and I need sleep, its amazing what life throws at you sometimes

props to you buddy, you handled the situation well. alot of people would have froze up when faced with a situation like that. i took a red cross certified first aid course three years ago and i highly recommend it. hope everythings ends up ok for your family.

thanks everyone, I didnt even think about that people are saving lives on a daily basis when I wrote this (mind has kinda been weird the last 24 hours) Dont know whether to be happy or sad so I'm kinda just here.

My bro in law is a fireman, was talking about carrying this lady out the one time with her skin melting off of her, pretty wicked stuff that some people witness on a daily basis. I give a lot of props to people that can deal with that constantly, takes a big heart and a strong mind.

Most of the tests are back, heart, lungs, and brain are fully functional. After I gave her 2 breaths her teeth clamped, thats supposedly when her heart stopped.

You know how they say that death happens in threes? Well, we've had 2 in the last month, and the whole time I'm performing cpr and the whole situation, I felt like I was in this weird cloud of interfering with something. It's more than just a mind feeling and never really was, more like a gut feeling. I just hope it doesnt come back to haunt me in some way. I know I did the right thing, but in some way I cant describe and fully comprehend, it feels like I didnt.

Then again, I did make out with my mother in law.....so that weight is a big load to carry on your shoulders.

Shit man, I can't imagine seeing that with someone I know personally. I am glad she is better and thanks to you yall have more time together. The making out part will make for a good story around the holidays.

I was walking out of my friends house in Fort Smith AR last July. I noticed the neighbor laying on his back with the lawn mower running in front of him. I yelled and he did not respond. I told my friend to call 911 and I ran over to the guy. He was bluish white and his eyes were just looking into space. It was crazy. I started CPR. I don't even know CPR. I just started doing what I seen on TV. I did not even think twice about it. I tilted his head back, Gave a deep breath, and then started pushing on the middle of his chest. He was making weird sounds, like a snoring sound. Not really gagging, but like his body was trying to take a breath. He had no eye movement, or anything. Just deep gasping for air. Almost like his brain was making his body respond.

I could hear the sirens by the time friend came back outside. Not even 2 min. They were their. The told me to keep pressing on his chest until they were able to get the tube and stuff down his throat. They then made me move and they took over. They had used the defibrillator on him 3 times and nothing. People were surrounding us at this point. Just watching. The continued to do CPR and put him in the back of the ambulance. But they did not leave. They just sat their. After about 15 min, the driver got out and said he was DOA. It looked like it was a massive Heart attack. He was pretty much gone by the time I found him. he said the noise I heard was what they call the death rattle. It is the bodies natural reaction to gasp for air. they just put him in the back of the ambulance for the sake of the crowd that was watching. I can tell you the exact time, what he was wearing, what the weather was like, every fuckin detail. But I cant tell you what I had for breakfast today. I have seen worse things, but this stuck with me for some reason.

It really changed my outlook on alot of things. I went on a diet that next month and I have lost 60lbs, I went camping almost every weekend after that with friends and family. Just started doing more shit to get me out of the house and live it up. I am only 32, but you never really know.

. great job man..... it takes guts and a clear head to jump on something like that.

When i was 14, my dad and i witnessed a bad roll over on the freeway just a 100 yards in front of us, it threw 5 of the 6 passangers out of the car and landed upside down. 3 of them landed in the middle of the road, we pulled over but the guy behind us must not have been paying attention and he creamed the one on the farthest side of the road, kept driving by the way. so my dad and i jump out and start throwing flares in road the but people aren't slowing at all they are just swerving and wrecking into each other, so i ran into the road and grabbed the woman closest to me and dragged her out of the road and then right as i did that another asshole comes flying by right were she was laying, she was all sorts of messed up but still trying to stand up so i figured her neck and back weren't busted... the other guy in the road kinda dragged him self off the road during this whole ordeal and he starts screaming so i run over to him and he points to the car and there was a hand sticking out from under it... it was crazy, the sad thing was they were all totally trashed. and the only one that didn't have a scratch on him was the driver who was also drunk as a skunk, but had the presence of mind to put on a seat belt. only 2 of the 6 ended up dieing, and the police never found the person that creamed the guy, i always wondered if he was already dead or not.

some crazy stories here people, and i hope that i never have to handle a situation like some of them. i am a first responder at my work and have handled lacerations, burns, falls, broken bones, diabetics, etc, but nothing immediately life threatening, except for avoiding somebody going into shock. we have an AED but i hope that i never have to use it, especially on one of my employees or co-workers.

it takes some balls to step up and help somebody out like you guys have. but somebody needs to react and help, and that somebody was you. you are somebody's hero now. whether you saved the life or not, at least you tried and i have the utmost respect for that.
