Snopczynski
I did Auto Technology 2 hour class in grade 11 and 12. Went to UTI, went to the Audi Academy, and became an Audi tech. Made $60k a year as a flat rate tech for 7 years. Switched to Saab because Audi became shit for warranty work. Worked in an Hourly Union Shop for 1.5 years, and finally made my way back out of the industry. I hate working on cars now. Do yourself a favor, go to school for architecture or real estate. Make tons of money and work on cars for fun. You have to be very smart, very fast, and willing to bend over and take it in the ass to be an Auto technician these days. racer
I would choose metal fab, but not as a future job. It will look good on your future resume, I promise. It shows creativity, the ability to follow instructions and protocols.
badassbanshee479
take as many classes in high school as you can! cause when you get out and you decide to go on to collage you have to pay for all of those classes! I did the welding classes and the auto shop and the small engine repair. so when I applied at a tech collage after high school I did not have a problem getting in. you can make damn good money working on cars as long as you are fast and dont make mistakes! I know some automotive painters by me that make over 100k a year.
Wildcardracing
Take my word for it kid, stay out of mechanic work if you enjoy it now you wont in a few years if you make it your career. I got into mechanics because I loved workin on things and now I hate it after 10 years in the industry. I wish I would have gotten into fabrication or something creative, I think that would be a better choice money and entertertainment wise for someone with a mehanical mind. Once you have fixed so many things it is hard to get that same feeling of fullfillment that I'm sure you get now, it's all the same after a while. Custom design or fabrication on the other hand is something new all of the time. Just my .

Got out and started wrenchin for a dealer. I was there for 6yrs and decided it was time to get out. After wrenchin all day it was hard to come home and get the work done that needed to be done on my own machines.. I havn't wrenched for a check in close to 5yrs now and don't regret gettin out a day in my life.. You know its bad when I get paid more money to wrench on bowling pinsetters then I did for motorcycles. On a more positive side... I still get all my employee discounts !! 350BANSHEE350
okay guys you got me thinkin now, i will definatly take fabrication because it invovles painting but i dont know how much i would make working in calgary as a powdercoater for cars its a city with over 1 million people though my uncle is a welder , he teaches welding now sometimes but works for a huge shop and one of there machines alone is worth 36 million and there are like 12 machines pretty crazy, he told me that and average welder there makes 16 an hour okay i think i could do better with paint right hmm i am really confused now so i will be taking metal fab and maybe auto tech for the hell of it but what could i take in college or university that will make me good money and will still like to work on my shee and cars after years of doing it , powder coating , what should i be looking at doing? thanks guys btw on a side note my grandma took her car into shop because the head gasket blew and it cost 1200 to fix it , i think that is stupid , is it? lol because we all now how some dealerships make there money
Wildcardracing
I meant, you should look into things like mechanical engineering or mechanical drafting and fabrication. Instead of being like me (the dummy under the hood) Be the one designing the bikes, cars, engines or whatever. Don't get me wrong, you can make a ton of money in the mechanic field, but you can also starve...It is always feast or famine. And doing it for a livin takes the joy and excitement out of it. 350BANSHEE350
yeah my father told me the same , why work on them when you can design them , so how would i get intothe direction?
nayr742003
if you are going to get into that you need to get inot fabraction look kid you need to listen to what these guys are telling you there is money in but when its your stuff or the weekend you dont even want to look at a wrench. I hate to brag but me and my father have ben into cars for a long time we own and have owned alot of them we have like 6 old rides now between us and when i wrenched on the weekend i was the tool bitch and ran for cofee and parts i hated being in our grages or even touching a tool and some of mycars didnt get done till years later. Now every weekend we are in the grage restoring our cars and the love of it came back. The other thing is when you start buying tools shit you will have a tool payment as big as your new truck or house payment and that can get real exhausting espically when you add them up and there is like thousands of dollars there just sitting in a drawer. Get into computers thats where the bread is

With our economy quickly falling into a recession, I would not recommend real estate. If you want to work on a "race team", you should go to college and get a degree in Mechanical Engineering..And I wouldn't start out as a tech and "work my way up" to management. Most companies these days like to hire people that have management education and leave the "techs" in the position that they are in.
