My highschool options

Recommended Posts

alright so im going into grade 10 and i am gettin transfered to another school because my designated one is shit

i am looking for something to help me out in auot mechanics and maybe go beyond high school with the subject

i would like to be almost like pit crew mechanic but we dont have much big name racers here in calgary that i know of

so i wouldnt mind working at a dealership as long as the pay is good

alright so for the usual subjects like math, science, social and language arts i am in all top classes i dont know how they work in the US but here most are called pure 10 classes

anyways the options i am looking at taking are

auto technology , for grade 10 it goes through the basics of electronic controls and how everything works in a way and gets more advanced in 11 and 12 and in 12 you do engine reconditioning and tune ups etc

metal technology, which introduces welding and polishing and making things (they give certain projects) and it gets more advanced through out the other years

auto mechanics, basicly focuses on the for stroke engine and is more hands on then auto tech up top ^ start at like oil changes and stuff and move up to engine tune ups fuel systems drive trains steering suspension etc

please thanks for any help

i went to tech for auto technology. its better to go into the field right after high school, you learn more doing it. you might wanna looking into a different job. its kinda shitty being stuck as an auto mechanic. most i people i know who are mechanics wish they did something else, that includes myself.

you can learn how to wok on car and what not fairly ez now days with the net, i would say go to the metal fab class. thats nto somthing you can just read about and do, that hands on practice makes perfect. i was in auto shop in school and yea it was cool and i had a good time but i wish we had a fabricating classes. not like the regular metal tech but a automotive fab class. learning to do body work and paint and all that. thats where theres alot of money and talent.

but as said a career in this industry isnt always the best. although as long as your happy doing what you do, thats all that should really matter in the end. i would much rather not make a furtune but love what i do rather then being loaded but despise going to work every day

Last year I took mechanical trades at Tech an we learned some carpentry, electrical work, welding an metal fab, cnc plasma cutting, and small engine repair an service.

I already knew how to weld as we have a couple of welders at my house an the year before I took shop at school an as a senior this year in high school I took shop again an decided not to take tech as I mainly am intrested in metal fab an thats all we do at school in shop class.

yes that makes sence thanks for the info

there isnt any big names down here in calgary , no IHRA and stuff so i dont want to work on peoples junk cars all day if you know what i mean

i could take 2 fabricating classes in this school

metal tech and metal fabrication

and another of my choice does that sound good

i still might take auto mechanics for fun

Hey man dont let all these guys knock techs Before i got a union job i worked in a mechanics shop it did get old but i made alot of cash doing it. The shop i wporked in restored all old rides we did everything from tearing it all the way down to a totall restoration. You half to start from the begining and trust me i worked there for 7 years before i started bolting iron. It is all up toyou and how far you want to go and what you want out of life but ij all in all a head mechanic only makes around 50k a year i think.

Yeah, like he said ^^^, get into a union, youll be set. I'm not an auto mechanic, I do engineering work for a utility company here in NJ. The auto techs that we have, start at about $16 an hour, and top out at about $32 an hour. After that you get into management positions in the fleet department (non-union, no more hands on work). I would assume it would be similar at most other large companies.

I know these guys do bust their asses until they get into the management positions. The pay isn't great, but if that's what your going to like doing, you can definately make some green, especially on the OT.

not everyone can fix a car these days. i work on everything and being i work in a wealthy town, i work on a lot BMWs, benz's, and stuff like that and some these things have some F'd up problem that are not a easy fix. cars are harder now to work on than ever.

o and yeah 50-60k is pretty much what your gonna make as a tech. if your really good and you've worked for a dealer for 20+ years you can make 80k+.

hmm sounds like it will be a slow starting career but i think i am up to it

i am not a big fan of sitting in a desk just from being at school so i would like to be able to do something were i can move around some and maybe lead into some of my own designing or a performance shop that does porting and boring and stuff , stuff thats interesting to learn about and you can have fun and make it your own (to an extent that is) and the money factor

i am going to wait a while to get married so no worry about a wife robber :banghead: yet.

i want to be able to suport my family when i have one leaving money somewhat out of praspective

oh and enough to suport my shee :woot:

so i was looking in the schools book of options and found out there is a higher class of mechanics and fab work kinda like higher classes of math

i will be taking the auto technology 10-1 which is like engine reconditioning and tuning etc and getting into higher levels of business

and the other class metal tech 10-1 which is more advanced then just learning how to weld, you even have the possibility to sell your product as a project which is pretty cool, oh and this also teaches how to high velocity spray paint which i dont know what it is but sounds cool (probably just paint for cars)

and that leaves my third one to anything else i desire

not to mention the auto tech is worth double the credits as the normal options

thanks a bunch guys i really really appreciate it
