my favorite spot is winchester bay IMO it has the most diverse terrain out of all the oregon dunes from some knarly hills to trails to jumping or whatever, you can do it all there... i think the sound limit is like 93 or 98 there but ive only been caught once and that was with a raptor blowing almost 120db. you have to pay to camp on the sand or in any of the parks im not sure on price thought. i always stay at windy cove camp grounds its like 15 bucks and it has a shower... hope that helps.

I think Florence has the most diverse riding. Jumps, drags, hills, and a pretty good sized riding area. The cool thing about the Oregon dunes, is that there are 3 very good riding areas within 45 miles of each other, so it's easy to try them all. Sound at those 3 is 93dB. You will need to get Cascade silencers for your pipes or a hush kit or risk getting a $145 ticket.

yeah florence is cool especially since so much of winchester bay is getting closed off. go to them both and check out coos bay while your at it.

Winchester Bay is the best BY FAR if you like hill climbing. There is no comparison. At times during the year, there are the highest dunes in the country (depending on weather conditions, of course). There are some pretty intense trails off the sides of the 5 fingers, however they are not very easy to find. We go there more often than anything else. It's awesome for everything but jumps. We either stay at the campground, the bungaloes, or the manufactured rental homes.

Florence is the biggest. It has all the drag spots, and there are so many trails. I think the biggest problem is that most people go to the middle of the dunes and don't know where to go from there. They go over comp. hill and ride for awhile and that's it...turn around and watch the drags. BORING. If you explore, it is awesome! There are at least 3 campgrounds within riding distance, plus countess vacation homes if you've got the $. Nothing like it!

If you like a little bit of everything, either Florence or Hauser/Horse Fall!!! It is the "hidden" treasure of the Oregon coast (besides Sand Lake, but it's too small). Hauser has a KOA, and you get hill climbing, trails, drag (ever heard of "boxcar drags"?) It's a nice journey between all 3 (Horse Fall, Hauser and Boxcar).

I think Oregon has a maximum db level of 96 +or-. I've heard 94, I've heard 98. Nobody will bother you with a db level around 100. I don't EVER ride with my spark arrestor, which is required.

Good write-up, man.

However, the sound limit is 93dB and my buddy got a ticket last trip out and his bike was right at 100dB. Also, spark arrestors aren't required on the dunes. You can pretty much avoid sound tickets by staying away from the rangers and sheriffs. We just happened to fly past a ranger on a trail.

I just moved to Oregon about a year ago and have not been out riding yet (I had to work alot and had to inoperable bikes for most of the year).............. The last time I rode in Oregon was about 6 years ago.

With that said, Sandlake, Florence, and Winchester are all good.

  • 2 weeks later...

A big group of us going down on Friday the 15th to Winchester. Its a holiday weekend so we can make the best of a long drive from Washington. We are camping at Discovery Point so if any of ya are going to be down there over the holiday weekend stop in for a cold one! We'll be the ones with the lifted Dodge and Chevy diesels and a mess of Banshee's!! Hopefully the weather holds out to just the "showers" the extended forecast is showing.

That would've been great to get out this past weekend. It's been the worst winter I can remember around Oregon for a long time. We've got a group of 16 going to Winchester on the first weekend in April (8 guys, 8 girls). Staying at the bungaloes. It's going to be CRAZY. 9 YFZ450s, 1 Kawasaki bike, 1 KFX450 (who invited that guy? LOL) 1 TRX450, and 1 Banshee. It's still 1 1/2 months away, so I'm heading to Christmas Valley on the 15th of March. Hopefully it won't be too cold...

Just got home from this weekends rideing, the weather was UNHEARD OF for Feb down there, was nice and calm and pretty warm, the wind seemed to pick up at about 3:00 every day tho, rode at Winchester on Sat, then went and rode at Florence on Sunday, Florence was a mad house, no where to stage. The weekend was a blast, no injuries aswell makes it a bigger plus. Hope everyone else had as good of one as we did!
