Ok so I did my first tear down of the ol' banshee. Thank god I know how to turn some wrenches other wise I would be screwed, anyways I will post some pics later of the tear down. I just wanted someone to look at them and see if they see anything wrong like cylinder scoring, bad pistons (they look very good and new).

My problem occured when I was ridding the piss all day without a problem one till the end of the day I switched the lights on to get back to camp and it just did not want to idle for shit. Well got it back and went to start it the next day and still the same will not idle unless choke is all out, even still if I try and gas it, it bogs and dies. Nice sweet white smoke is being blown out mainly the right side pipe. Plugs looked a little rich but ok.

Now the questions I have......

1. Could I have burnt a ring or two?

2. Could the problem also be the cylinder base gasket?

3. If the coolant that I drained from the cylinders and water pump was greenish black does that mean for sure some kind of coolant gasket leak somewhere or what?

4. Off topic but last question.....I have to really nail the throttle when Im taking off from a stand still, it just wants to bog down and I almost have to wheelie to take off......what the hell could cause this? It runs fine and throttle response is good once you get going just that damn take off.

PLEASE HELP!!

Thick white smoke.Good chance its your headgasket. Is the radiator fluid low?

It was just barely low, I mean this all happened so freaking fast and I basicly just dove head first into tearing this thing apart. Had it tore down in about an hour. I just want to make sure my rings are good with out having to re-assemble everything then turn around and do a complete top end re-build on it.

Could be a head gasket, but can be right hand side crank seal.

Did you clean those pistons up or is that how they looked when you tore it appart? If that is how they looked when you tore it appart I would say the head gasket went bad or the head came loose letting coolant in. Washed the pistons clean.

The RH side can also smoke because of a bad crank seal. That seal has to keep the transmission fluid out of the motor. Seal goes bad and it starts buring transmission fluid causeing it to smoke.

I dont think it could be this....its possible but the smell the smoke was putting off was real sweet not like burnt tranny oil you know what I mean??

As for the pistons, the guy I bought it from said he just had the top end re-built with about 5 hours on it. The only thing I did was mop up what little coolant was on top of the pistons.

hey if you dont have a cool head , or the money to dish out for one right now, i would suggest milling down the stocker about 20 or 30 thousandths, will makes sure it is true (so your new gasket doesn't leak) and add a little compression.. also were the head nuts on good and thight when u took it apart? maybe someone didn't tourqe the head tight enough, i have never seen a set of pistons that clean, usually just being fired up for a little bit will turn them brown, they look new, i am guessing a head gasket failure.

If I mill it down some, will the stock gasket still be ok to use??

The head nuts were good and tight on the head studs....I do think they were properly TQ'ed.

Yeah when I seperated the gasket from the head there was a little coolant that had passed through....as far as the pistons go, only thing I can think is that the coolant got heated up and acted as a solvent and just cleaned up the carbon build up on the top of the pistons.

yea u can still use the stock gasket just fine if you mill the head, i would do a search or ask around on how much to shave it, not sure how it will effect your squish, but people definately shave them, it will add some power.. if it where me i would mill the head, throw it on with a new gasket, and see what happens, i think you will be fine.

How long have you had your banshee?

Since Friday rode it for about 20 minutes before I bought it. Rode on Sat for about half the day on my prop (about 8 acres) never really got out of 3rd gear, mostly 2nd gear.

I thought I read it smoked out of the RIGHT hand side exhausts. But if its both, sure it can be a head gasket. Maybe some H2O in the gastank?

Maybe I dont know....will know when I get a gasket and get it all together.

I would try a new head gasket. Or you could slap on a cool head while you have the stock head off.

Yeah thats what I was going to do and if that doesnt fix it then its all coming apart and I will check the top end work to ensure it was performed correctly. As far as the head goes I just dropped 2K on this bisch so the wife is already mad that Im tearing into it and having to spend money on it. I mean its been a whole 2 1/2 days that I have owned it. She thought I was tearing it apart to big bore it and make it faster, she calls me Tim Tayler from that TV show Home Improvement cause I cant keep anything the way it was bought, I HAVE to mod it!!! Speed is my crack!
