Stator and Coil

Recommended Posts

So I was riding glamis, about 3 miles from camp and the shee just died, not ripping, just rolling along about 1/4 throttle. anyway, tried new plugs, nothing, no spark at all. So the shee sat the entire weekend and i rode my CRF450. Anyway, i have since tested my electrical system. Kill switch is good, key is good, pickup is good, stator winding is BAD. Also, my coil is testing bad on the secondary test. Primary between the two terminals is testing good but as soon as i go to test between terminal and plug cap (with or without the cap on) i get OL no resistance. so which did i lose first? The coil, then the stator, or the stator then the coil? They would have had to go out simultaneously right? Did the stator fry the coil. Anyway, gonna order a new coil and stator in the next few days. Saw some discussion on ricky stator products, other options? comments please!!!

The coil is kinda a crapshoot IMO.

Mine runs good, but tests bad every time.

I just keep one handy to throw in there when out riding

just in case I loose spark.

Look in the Clymers manual for testing the stator. The

directions in there are good and easy to follow.

Ricky Stators are the best IMO.

already tested the stator in accordance with the clymers. Dead on the windings (Red and Green Wires) Lighting was good, (yellow and Black) and pickup was good. The coil thing has me confused. I guess i can just order a new stator, throw it on and see if the coil is actually bad?

My test the same way... always has. I have replaced my stator twice... no matter what the testing says and it's been the right choice. I think you'll fine the coil is fine.

Oh, and I haven't had one issue since I put in a ricky stator stator. Everything they make is quality.

My Shee did the same thing in October this year its under the title AGGRAVATED. :banghead: I finallay figured it out it was a short in the system my key switch was shorting out. I just took it out and soldered the two wires togethor and no more problems. beleive me i was aggravated and i even bought a new stator a waste of 350.00 bones when all along it was my key switch. :verymad:

It runs fine now  Hope this helps...

Same thing happened to me. Coil tested bad. It is hard to check the coil accurately without it being under a load. I bought a coil and still no worky. Checked the stator and it tested good, however, I did find a broken wire in the harness. Now I have a spare coil and that is what I use to test with to see if my original coil is bad!

The reason your coil tests bad is the test it self is wrong. We noted an error in the clymer manuals years ago and secondaries should be tested from lead to lead. I recommend testing with caps off and testing the caps separately. Coils rarely fail but get the finger most of the time because of testing errors. The coil is just a boosting transformer with so little current, it's like running a V8 at idle it's whole life.

Yes it is... great analogy. step up transformer just like in a power supply or battery charger.

i had the same issue with my '96 shee i changed stator and coil but it ended being the cdi

i bought a ricky stator cdi it worked great

No disrespect....but I feel RS products are garbage...

I'm on my second one in as many years. I've heard of a lot of grumbling about the quality of their part, especially the 200W high output version. Neither of the Stators I got from him were trimmed right at the pickup coil, either.... A less experienced person could have very well set the gap wrong and had a dead bike, or very poorly running one. All you'd have to do is trim the excess plastic...

OEM Stators are the only way to go....

Im actually in the process of shipping my RS back to him for a replacement. At high RPM it starts to cut out a little. In first when revving its fine but if im drag racing I can not even start out in 1st because the RPM is so high that it cuts out righ away. The guy that did my porting said go back to the stock one but I damaged it taking it out so im EFFED in that catagory. I bent one of the coils trying to get the flywheel off w/o the correct tool
