topend questions

last trip out to Dumont Dunes my motor went bye bye, anyway, it looks like the top ring in both cylinders managed to get stuck into the exhaust port a little bit and snag busting up the pistons. My question is, the exhaust ports got a little bit messed up, would it be safe to just bore the cylinders and put new pistons/rings/wrist pin bearings. or should i get port work done, I'll try to post pictures that look halfway descent, but all i have for a camera is my cellphone, so quality may lack a bit.

Right piston ring groove damage, left is about the same

WEll yeah, the pics don't help but you way want to look at having a porting guy check the ports for proper chamfer or even just port the cylinders to fix your problems. I with many of our customers, we port the bad spots away when working the exhaust port. I strongly recommend a pro look at your issue to see why it hung a ring in both cylinders. a super loose motor can do it but you need to know what happened.

well, i know the motor was gettin really really loose, unfortunately i didnt take the time to look into how bad it was, far as i can tell its 100% stock topend except for the coolhead, and its a 97, so 10 years on a topend, it may have been re-ringed but it hasnt been bored. I Wish any of the machine shops that do 2-stroke stuff here in Vegas would actually return phone calls or pick up the phone when i call. I'm really strapped for cash at the moment so im not lookin to get this done right away. I did find one shop in town (quad mania) that will send my cylinders out to be bored/ported (75/cyl for bore and 350/cyl porting). Does that sound like a good deal, or should i send out to one of the highly recommended guys outside Vegas.?

That is a total rip off. Those guys are making alot of money off people for being the middleman. 35-40/cyl for boring and anywhere from 175-450 for porting both cyls. Doesn't cost much to ship cylinders in the US and some builders have a pretty fast turnaround time, especially if you are looking just for a bore/hone and cleanup/chamfer port edges

cool sounds like a plan. I'm trying to keep this a mild fun quad with just enough to edge out my buddies on their raptors and yfz's, this banshee is gonna be 100% duner to the core as i doubt it will even get dirt tires on it again. anyway, thanks for all the help on here guys.

I recommend Kevin Herr in San Diego. Ported my bike, my buddies bike, and my brothers bike. They run like a CHAMP and he has a fast turnaround time.

Check out his web site and give him a call. 99% chance that he will answer his phone if you call at a decent hour.

GOOD WORK AND A GREAT GUY.
