Deep Sand & Chain Noise

I remember hearing something about chain noise coming from deep sand. That happened to me this weekend and it scared the crap out of me. It would only do it when I would drop into deep ruts into the sand and sounds like the chain is skipping teeth.

Is this just caused by sand packing into the chain when dragged though sand or does it actually skip teeth due to the sand?

Check your sprockets and make sure are not missing nay teeth.

Make sure your chain has teh proper tension.

Unless you're stuck, your chain should not be touching the sand. Cresting/Transitioning a dune is the only time you should be hitting sand and that's only for a second.

Your chain will sound like its skipping in deep sand because the sand gets in between the sprocket and the chain. The chain will slack up then pull and snap like its skipping. Its normal.

That is what I needed to know! Do you suppose it hurts the sprocket, chain or both? I did notice that after that happened a couple of times, I needed to adjust my chain AGAIN. :verymad:

ok. You guys must be talking about those trails you get in wet sand? Where it gets super rutted out?

Sorry to hear that. My sand is beautiful and dry!

Be careful, you can actually throw your chain off this way.

It is your chain skipping. The wet sand packs inbetween the chain and sprocket and streches out your chain and can cause it to skip. It can break teeth off the sprocket. A skid plate will help, but it will cause you to get stuck/high centered in the sand more offen.

What size wheels and tires are you running in the rear? I was having that problem myself, but I changed the size of my wheels and tires and it helped a bunch. I was running 20x10x10 haluers but now I have 21x12x8 Extreme haulers and they are much better for clearance. It picked up the rear a little to give me come more clearance.
