T5 pipes on stock

k dudes, i have never jetted before but understand it. i have only had a blasters carb apart a long time ago just to look at it. i have never done any mods on my banshee except put a twin-air filter kit on (because i didnt like how the stock filter just slid in there, didnt feel safe) i took it to a shop to have the jetting checked because everytime i would downshift and expect power it felt a little rich, then kicked in. they fixed it by moving the clip but now it has a little bog from 0 - 1/4 throttle (mind, this is only in like an idle state or going very slow, so im pretty sure that its kinda normal.

 

question: is jetting difficult? can i do it myself, i feel confident but am scared to screw it up. ive read tons of articles but i still dont know if i totally understand everything because ive never had my banshee apart yet and havent seen any carb pics.

 

im not planning on doing any other mods than putting t5 pipes and silencers on. (also buying a k and n jet kit)

 

is there anything i should know or any advice? I dont like the idea of not knowing how to fix my own quad so i wanna learn.

Pick up a clymers manual for the bike, all the years are the same except a few electrical and front end design changes.

 

Start reading here...a wealth of knowledge for carbs, etc.

 

Also...look at the stickies on top of this forum...those will probably give you 80% of what you need to know.

The rest you learn by trial by fire...like the rest of us...

thanks, manual has been ordered. ive ever only ridden and beaten machines, this one i want to take care of :)

 

i grew up on blasters then had to sell them because of parenthood but now im back in business, i have rode every sport atv's, some with mods and i have to say the banshee fits my riding style more than any of them exept maybe the 250r. anyways, i love this site and will surely have more questions in the future

Jetting is not hard once you understand which adjustment does what. It took me a while to get the bog off idle cleared up but that was simply because i never tuned a bike before. Turned out being my needle clip position. I was a too rich so i went lean one spot.

 

I've also done stupid things like forget the choke tube, put the needle clip on both carbs in different places etc. You live, you learn :biggrin:

Yep, jetting is hard as hell when you don't understand it but really super easy when you do. I guess that's with everything, brain surgery is easy when you know how to do it.... :biggrin:

also, if its not a problem, can anyone tell me where they would start the jetting process? i live in central pa, not sure of exact elevation here.

 

i can tell you what i run at 1000 asl ,280 mains stock pilots with t5s needle 4th groove from blunt end. hope this helps when you figure out elevation, youll get it, good luck!

ok, thanks. i just found that elevation finder site (talk about cool) i am at 1460 above sea level. would that be about the same as you?

yea that would be real close, toomey recomends 280s from sea level up to 2500, and you otta drill 1 inch holes in your air box lid so it can breath, you can go to your dealer and buy some 1 inch filters for the holes. think they come in a six pack. pay attn. to where you drill, other setups available.

ok, so would you say its safe to take carbs off and install 280's and put clip on 3rd position right off the bat? i mean just skip throwing the pipes on with stock jetting?

just wanted to say thanks to this site and all its members for all the usefull info. I had a completely successful installation of the exhaust and its great.

 

still a little boggy of 0 - 1/4. think that would be pilot screw? its just a tad bit noticeable.

 

 

anyway, thank you guys so much for all the help. very cool.

another dumb question; i went riding over the weekend last weekend and wanted to make sure i had a full tank of gas for the ride. so when i got to my friends house he had some gas and i used about 3/4 gallon to top off. he runs 20:1 and i run 32:1. I figured it would just smoke a little more. Now it seems like it has bad throttle response until it hits powerband, do you guys think its just becaue of that little bit of 20:1 gas? i havent altered anything since the install of the pipes and the air filter is clean, with 5 vents in airbox lid.

 

also, both gas was 92 octane
