tgbanshee Posted September 20, 2007 Report Share Posted September 20, 2007 I want to take the factory black paint off the heads to get a nice silver finish and was curious if sand/bead blasting has any detrimental effects on the heads. I would assume glass beads would be a lot easier on the heads than sand. Anybody ever do this? Also should a clear sealer be used over top of the finish after it's blasted? This is a pic of what i`m working on. if you use auto paint stripper or airplane stripper the paint will come off. i`m looking for a nice polished look using a dremel. its bin a long process so far. Let me know what you guys have done to yours. I would use air craft remover paint stripper. You will have a much smoother finish. The bead blasting is going to make a rough finish. Just make sure you wd40 the cylinder sleeves after your done rinsing with water. Or if your going to bore them then dont worry about it. Let me know what you guys have done to yours. Don't sand blast them unless you plan on finishing them. It will leave a rough finish as well. I did that to a head that I painted and sold on ebay. Looked great with paint. I also sand blasted my cases and jugs prior to painting from an automotive shop. Worked really well and was super easy to clean up. I wouldn't polish them because they require so much work to maintain (but that's just me, they look good polished, just alot of work). I would post a picture of it but I don't know how to reduce the size of the file. It held up really well to the abuse and the temp it was subjected to. Obviously...don't hit the sealing underside....and clean the F out of it with hoat, soapy water to remove any sand/grit/dirt left behind. Sorry i dont have pics, that head is on uncleribcrackers bike now. And no, you dont need to clear coat it because unclribcracker has been running for over a year and it hasnt corroded one bit.
