cdi problem

ok my banshee wouldnt start so i went through some things too look for a problem... i took the wires off at the CDI box and tested the resistance of the pickup coil and the other one and both things were with in the specs and then i put the harness back togeather and it started... it runs for 5 mins at the most then dies... then if i unplug the cdi and plug it back in it will start for a little... do you think its a bad CDI??? or just some wiring problems??

Thanks

sounds like a typical CDI short. Find someone with the same CDI and try it. Another thing to try is moving the wiring around while it is running and see if there is a change. If not, there ya go. Good job in isolating your problems instead of guessing.

Another thing to look at is the condition of spark. Turn the lights off and check for blue spark. Orange is a sign of primary low voltage. If all coils test good, you are still on the right track with the CDI.

Although I agree with Brandon, just for the sheer hell of it, make sure the vent tube on your gas cap is not plugged up.

With a clogged vent tube, it'll die after a few minutes...as well.

It's the little things like that that can cost you a bunch of money for such an easy fix.

Hell, start it up with the gas cap loose and let it run...if it still dies, it's not the venting of the tank...

ok tired the new CDI no luck... same thing with the other one.. any ideas??

Let the bike run till it dies and retest stator leads. You may have a short in the stator that is not showing up. You can also monitor the stator output with a meter while running and see if it falls off when warm. I really doubt it is the ignition coil so that leaves the stator. You saved your self some money by at least testing the CDI, now move on. Did you move the wires around while running?

Does the bike good when it runs? Does it die like you hit the switch or slowly go down? Remember also to check the resistance in your multimeter before performing tests. Some meters do not zero out and may show 1 ohm or more in resistance.

We see a lot of burned up wiring in banshees from the pipes hitting the harness. Something to look at.

well i tested the coil and swaped it with another banshee and it did the same thing so its deff. not a coil... when it dies it sputters and then dies... i took out some crap that was wired into the harness it was where the cdi went in someone put these connecters that split one wire into two and then hardwired the cdi box in... so it still had the stock haness but not connected... i cut the harness out and then soldered and heat shunk all the wires... it ran mint for the 15 mins i ran it but thats not enough to tell.... its geting too late to keep riding it around i dont need the cops here again lol..

Well I guess I did not ask if all the wiring was OEM. Generally, when I see a rats nest of amateur wiring, that is my VERY first suspect in an electrical problem. Hopefully you have spotted the problem. Sounds like you are on the right track now.
