Herr Jugs Racing (Porting)

About two months ago, I tore my ACL while out riding. Knowing that I'd have some downtime, I decided to tear the Banshee down. I had some questions as to how straight the frame was, and figured that I'd pull the engine down and go through it while I had it out.

The top end looked decent for a stock '01, but I hate tearing something down and just putting it back together without improving anything. After much debate/research I decided to send the jugs out to Kevin @ Herrjugsracing.com.

I called him with my inquiry, and got ahold of him on the first try (it's always a bonus to be able to reach the person in question when you're spending money with them--which is often rare). We spoke for about 30 minutes about the setup I was running, what I used the quad for, and what I was looking to get out of it. After having spoken to him and realizing that he didn't just do "One-size fits all" porting, and wanted to make sure that I got what I wanted, I shipped the jugs out to him Next Day Air, emphasising that although the quad was going to be down for a while, I wanted to get the motor back together before my brother came back down to visit (always have to have an ace up your sleeve when involved in sibling rivalry ;-) ).

I shipped the cylinders out on Thursday. On Friday he called me to let me know that he recieved them and was going to start on them right away.

Sunday comes around, and I'm at home doing some computer work for my business. I get a call from Kevin saying "I spent the weekend getting these done, and I just want to know how you want them sent back out". I told him "Next Day Air", and sure enough, they arrive at my shop on Tuesday morning.

I unpacked them, with thoughts of them looking like some "backyard" porting jobs I've seen that looked like LSD-popping beavers with titanium teeth got ahold of them. However, when I got them out, I was very surprised at the quality of work put into them. The porting was smooth, surface-finished properly, and very symetrical between both jugs. I'm very UN-knowledgeable in the pricinples of 2-stroke ports and their effects, however, own a performance company which builds (on-average) 2-3 4-cylinder, turbocharged, race motors during the busy season, and have done a fair amount of porting on said engines over the last 10 years in the industry, so I know quality workmanship when I see it.

I put the engine back together, put it back in the new frame, and called Kevin with some last-minute timing/jetting questions on his work. Once again, I got him on the first call, and he was more then willing to discuss things with me, including some quirks I had with the engine that had nothing to do with what he did, and some advice on different setups for the future.

After getting off of the phone, I jetted it to his specs, and started it up. I did a heat-cycle, checked everything, then had my younger brother ride it for a little to break it in.

The jetting was a *LITTLE* off, so we dropped the needle back down one notch, rode it some more, then finally ripped into it. The quad is a completely different beast! The midrange (what I was looking for) is MUCH stronger, and the top end picked up quite a bit as well. Instead of it being like an on/off switch with the power, it hits much lower in the rpm range, and pulls very linearly up to the peak with no weird drop-offs. Power-wheelies are now just a flick of the thumb away in 1st/2nd and 3rd, and 4th can easily coax the front up with some midrange pegging of the gas. This is with a stock front, and 41 rear (for reference).

Little else to say then "A big thumbs up" to Kevin's business practices, and his work. He'll be recieving 2 more sets of jugs shortly from my younger brother and one of my employees.
