We moved the clip down one notch which should raise the needle. It does run hot somtimes out in the sand with all of the spinning. I guess we can rais the needle some more and go to a bigger jet. is breaking up and some backfiring always a sign of running lean or could it be somthing else?

Most of the time lean will give you a light tan or grey plug color. Takes 1 minute to check em. Popping when you let off the throttle from wide open is definately lean. They said clean the carbs cause dirty pilots or slightly clogged mainjets will lean a motor out too. If the bike wont idle you need carbs synced and air screws adjusted right.

Backfiring can be caused by a few things. Being too lean or being to rich. Also the timing can cause a backfire. You may have an electrical issue. Swap some parts off of your shee onto his and see what happens. Stator, flywheel etc..

we rode today and it idles fine, the popping and backfiring is when he is on the throttle hard, if he is easy on the throttle up to about 3/4 it doesnt break up. we did clean the carbs.

sounds lean to me. if it's on full throttle, go up on the mains. if it cuts out before he gets to full throttle, with an agressive punch on the throttle, then you should raise the needles a clip or two. you might try the needles first as it's easy to get to and you can do it quickly. has he done a WOT plug run?

we are going to try to move the needle up one more notch, and check the timing. the timing should be advanced 4 degrees right? what is a WOT run?
