wrx600rr
Ok, so I have been looking for awhile and found a 99 shee at a dealership for 1800 well he's asking 2195 but I can get it at that. So it is pretty stock, has fmf fatty pipes on it, dura blue axle and a chrome grab bar. It fires right up with the first kick, smokes a little. Anything I should look for? I am not very mechanically inclined with this machine, I know they need top ends every couple years sometimes sooner depending on the rider. So the story behind the quad is a guy bought it with his father being the co-signer then he stopped making payments so daddy repoed it from him. Sat in the barn for about 4 years til he had car troubles and traded it in plus cash for a used car a couple days ago. I rode it for about 5 minutes and it screams and pulled the wheels up through 3rd gear. If I buy this quad what should I do since it sat for that long without being rode, mind you I am going to silver lake here in about 3 weeks with it. I have seen posts about checking compression? Who and where can I find a shop to do this test? What should it be? Nick

Bansheekid07
well what i look for is like weard noises comming from the engine, and lots of smoke more than just warm up smoking also an oil leak and hacked up bolts will tell ya its been appart maby and look for rust to. if u do buy it change the oil and prob the coolent flush the system because it sat for a while so u never no. thats my .02 cents good luck -Bansheekid07

Washburn
check the trans oil before you start it then after its warmed up, make sure its not a black milky color, if it appears to be black drain it, It should always be gold, and see if you catch any metal flakes or a milky substance Start it up let it warm up by bliping the throttle every few secs then ride it and make sure it doesnt pull to one side and it goes through all of the gears shifting smoothly and without major bogs in the powerband then check the plugs and that will tell you if its lean, you want a nice tan color pull on all 4 of the wheels, side to side, up and down, in and out to check for play so your sure you dont need all new bushings compress the front and rear shocks with your arms a few times to make sure they arent shot Look at the frame throughly for stress marks or cracks, Lift it up and set it on the grabbar and look at every point, also make sure the subframe is straight eye up the rear plastics and make sure they line up straight with the subframe If your going to do a compresion test it should read 110-115 in each cyl at the lowest Dont be afraid to get a little dirty for a half hour by checking it out, dont let the dealer deture you its your purchase. I think thats about it bud, Good luck
wrx600rr
Thanks for all the replies! I will definately use your advice on what to check. I am going tomorrow to look at another one also it's a 96 with all new plastics, fresh painted frame, good rubber, fmf fatties, boysen reeds, cool head somethings!!??!! Only thing I didn't like about it was the twist throttle! How is that on a quad? asking price is 1995.00 Overall the 99 was more stock but looked abused, pipes were rusted pretty good in front of the engine, bald tires, squeaky when I sat on it. But it ran really good, the guy told me he is running rich right now since it sat for soo long??? If it smokes alittle, thats not bad, its burning oil afterall. Take it for a test ride make sure it shifts and doesnt slip, and listen for motor damage or possability for motor damage like rasping bad or lean pinging. If it runs, personally Id take it for $1800, but I could fix just about any of it. With the help of this site and a good description or photos, you could get anything done with it too. Coupelx
I agree. Obviously in your case you want something that runs decent but if i ran across a decent one for 1800 i would buy it even if the motor was shot.
wrx600rr
dang it!!! It was sold when I went to buy it! ::
WALLACE84
Buy the 99. Also, look for the infamous chain wack on the cases. It wont hurt anythink mechanically but you would need a whole new top case half to fix it. It will be right above the front sprocket on the top case. Everybody listed everything else to look for. Good Luck!!!
flattrakker
mine has the infamous chain slap.. is that really all you need is the top end of the case.. i personlly think it wrecks my whole banshees apperance so i will definiatly look into buying the top half.. wish i woulda found one that wawsnt like mine but for 1500 bucks i got an awesome deal. wrx600rr
well I drove by after I found out the 96 was sold and didn't see it outside the dealership where it usually sits. I always do this, let the good deals slip through my hands! Nick
flattrakker
like i said earlier in this topic. the right banshee will find you. give it some time and dont go out and buy the first thing you see, in most cases a deal thats too good to be true, isnt true or there is something hidden. again, take your time.
