RZ350 Cylinders

I'm pretty new to the whole banshee scene and even newer to your guys' website. My machine is completely stock. I figured it would be a good canvas to start with. I'm not going for an all out racing quad. My goal is more directed toward rideability. I want around 60 hp give or take and still be able to ride my quad with buddies just putting around. I though that rz cylinders with powervalves might give me more low end torque and better rideability. What do you guys think?

Well the rz cylinders will do exactly that. Theyll give you around 60hp or more. Pluss they have a lot of bottem end. And the problem with those are that theres a LOT of electrical problems! But i would recomend an mx port, 34mm pj carbs, and duncan racing low end pipes. Thats the best setup for you! :thumbsup: Rz banshees

man that's an old page...is it yours?

 

3-4 guys on here will reply that have RZshee's...they'll all tell you it was a worthwhile conversion. i've done it myself and love it! it's not the easiest as you have to add some electronics...but it's really not that bad. imho, i wouldn't say a lot of problems. i had an rz manual and went from there.

 

now, if you want easy, do what adrenaline junky said and get a decent port job and go.

Yeah, it's worth it. Mostly depends on what your truly after. There are other PV'cylinders out there such as Cheetah's, and T-Rex's, but they are expensive and I would say that they are more aimed at the drag racers.

If you are truly looking for an all around quad and like tinkering RZ's are a great choice. With the right porting, pipes, reeds and carbs, maybe even a stroker, they can hit the 85 - 90 hp, so there is potential with them.

I decided this route just because they were factory Yamaha pieces, and really not into drag racing.

 

There are several components you will need to come up with, such as

 

- complete topend, including the head and all the nuts, and all the powervalve parts

- stator, flywheel

- cdi box

- powervalve control box

- power valve servo and cables

- wiring diagrams, ( I have those )

- RZ 350 manual, such as haynes or clymers

- pipes that will clear the powervalve pulley housing on the left cylinder ( unless you like to take a hammer to the ones you have ).

 

Stock pipes will clear but won't do the the RZ cylinders any justice. The "Rocket" pipes will clear and the "NEW" version of the "Rocket" pipes will clear and are supposed to make more power.

 

I bought parts and pieces for my RZ swap ( which still isn't done ) but if I had to do it again, I would probably just by a complete running bike like a 86 - 90 Candian version and then part the rest out on E-Gay.

 

If all this sounds too much for You, then just get a good port job on your stock cylinders.

I already have the cylinders for the conversion. I'm hunting the rest of the stuff to finish it. I really want to have the cylinders sitting around and ready for install when I need to rebuild my top end. Who makes the rocket pipes? Is rocket the brand?

can you put a whole RZ engine in a banshee? will it bolt right up? bottom end and all? My case is cracked and i was looking to see if something like that would fit.

 

Yes, the RZ engine will bolt right in it's almost exactly the same as the banshee engine.

 

They do, however have different internal transmission gearing ( wider ratio ) so it would be best to use the banshee tranny gears within your RZ cases.

 

You would also need to eliminate the oil injection.

Yes "Rocket" is the brand, and I must forewarn you that there is a lot of "dramma" surrounding these pipes. Some people will tell you they are junk and some will say they're awesome. The only thing I can say is that, if you are going from a stock bike to a RZ with Rockets, is Hang on Tight!

 

As for obtaining a set of these pipes, check their site, I think it's www.rocketpipes.com or put a message in the want section.

I made a trip to a machine shop that specializes in 2 stroke stuff. They quoted me around $400 for a really good port job and to have my cylinders bored to match some new .060 weisco pistons. I can't wait to save up a little bit of money. Do you guys think that I might need to get some bigger carbs for my setup?

Allright, I had to chime in here. Yes the RZ conversion is worth it, the RZ tranny is better than the she's (Smoother), the RZ gearing is fine, and there is a better pipe then the Rockets and the PTR's, just unfortunately there are limited numbers right now but will soon change. Other than the Oil injection you will have to buy a little plug for the top of the case where the tach contraption used to be. You can buy this right from Yamaha. As far as porting goes for $400 I would send it to Patriot Racing or Passion Racing. From what I have seen there are a very few builders that have experience with the RZ other then these two, and they both know ther stuff. The electronics at first were difficult but if you take your time and do it right it is prettly simple. There is a thread on here I think called "RZ gods" that could act as your template. If you need photos and assistance on this let me know. I have many photos of my set up.

 

As far as carb set up, I am partial to Mikuni 28 FS. I mostly seasonal road ride and ride trails, and these carbs are cheap to buy $200 new and you can still use your airbox which is a big plus in dusty situations. As a heads up the 28 FS are very finicky/sensitive but are very easy to tune and you see results. If you plan on doing a lot of drag racing buy bigger carbs, but the stock 26's are actually very good carbs for trail applications and would work fine for your set up unless you choose other wise. In you answer to your other question teh RZ motor fits right in the shee frame with no mods. Oh yeah you will need to make or buy exhasut flanges since the RZ are not permanent and bolts onto the cylinder.
