Trail Tech Vapor

ok so i got my vapor computer thing in yesterday. havent actually got to isntalling the speed sensor yet but they had several diffrent ways that you can do it? can anyone else that has this system give me some guideance on this?

I hooked the vapor up to my 1999 banshee, I had no luck with the tach working, called them, me and the tech went threw everything we could think of, so they sent me a vector, I like this much better, they gave me the remote to for free, and its set up for more racing it had more options than the vapor, I googled my problem and I guess Im not the only one, when in idel the tach read great, when I put the bike in gear or under load the tach would max out and stay there threw all gears, one other thing if you choose to up grade the stator or coil the tach wont read again, also do not hook this up to the sator direct is best to hook it up to a 9v battery, I bought a radioshack box put some foam in it to stop the battery from rolling around than bought a 9v battery connector and wired it up, the stock stator is to crazy and messes with the tach, any questions e-mail me at Mrentz2701@msn.com I have pis of all the mountings to I can e-mail them if you want, I drilled a hole threw the disc sheild and mounted the speedo threw there,

???? post above = a little confusing.

I just fitted it as per instructions. Removed one disk bolt and installed the supplied bold. Was careful not to over tighten and strip the bolt. Then I drilled out one of the holes in the brake shield and fitted the sensor. It took a few minutes to install with a 9v power feed. I checked the speed against the banshee converter online and it was accurate so I did not play with it.

When you get to 6 gear WOT the vapor is basically unreadable due to vibration, but what do I know it is one in the morning after a  few

I tried a Vapor on my 89 and had the same problem, if I revved it above 7 grand before it reached 100 degrees the Vapor would do a complete reset. I took the bike up to Trail Tech twice, they are 45 miles away. They tried all the different ways of hooking it up that they knew of, they replaced ALL the sensors, we tried a different Vapor unit, powered it with a 9V battery, I had resistor plugs, etc. Between the first and second times that I had it up there, I decide that it was to hard to read the tach while I was riding and that if I did not know when to shift it after 18 years of riding I shouldn't be on it, so when I wen't back the second time they swapped me out with a Vector. It works fkawlessly, and does what i want- speedo, temp, and hour meter for maintainence. I used the Trail Tech bracket that came with it because I had the early style brakes/spindles, but like the other guys said just figure out which hole in the brake shield lines up with the magnetic bolt, drill it out and mount the sensor there. Good luck.

to everyone installing the vapor and having trouble with the tach working. wejust did one on a kfx450r. the tach wire has a resistor in it that was bad and would not allow the tach to work. we put the power on the tach and it worked just fine. we emailed trail tech and they sent us a new wire without the resistor in it. i have see many other people have the same problem. just a heads up to you all. resistors are bad mmmmmmmmmmkkkkkkkkkkk. they are worthless and can go bad very easily.

I tried two different Vapor units and a total of three different tach pickup wires and it made no difference, hell I did not even have a tach pickup wire on the bike and it would reset. The engineer( yes the engineer that designed the thing, not just a service tech) at Trail Tech was baffled and he had the bike right in front of him.

Do they design it to be used with resistor spark plugs or non resistor ones, or does that make a difference?

makes a BIG difference. everytime I use b8es non resistor plugs it's pegs out and resets under load. Went to br8es and haven't had a problem since. Even the tech confirmed this.

I was running BR8ES plugs in mine and it was still resetting, like I said before, the engineer at Trail Tech was baffled by it. After I went to the Vector unit, it has not reset one time.

same here, I tryied the resistor tach wire, witch is not for the banshee we(me & trail tech) just gave it a try, nothing... the vapor did'nt even read, so I went up to radio shack an bought a 640k resistor(i think that was the k's) sodered it in and nothing, so resistor was not bad. they sent me new vapor and nothing, finalily I just gave up got the vector and am very happy with it, here's the problem if you want to upgrade coil, stator in the future your vapor will no longer read the tach, always check you ground I sanded of the paint and tapped a hole direccetly off the frame you cant use other grounds and watch out because the speedo likes to ground to the spindel so some teflon tape will fix that. the vapor was not worth the month and half of down time, I missed my first snow! by the way my banshee is a 1999 whats yours I cant get my photo of my banshee to post so here's a link to pic's http://s682.photobucket.com/albums/vv182/mattrentz_2009/Yamaha%20Banshee/

bigmatt, this thread was started in july 07 bro!! lol

i have a 94 banshee with b8es plugs and the tach works fine. no problems at all. i have the tach wire taped directly to the plug wire. the rpm's were off when i wrapped it around the plug wire. set the ppr to 2 and i was good to go.

the speedo is pretty acurate too. i set mine by a handheld gps.

I know this thread is old.... BUT I know some people out there are referencing this thread like I have been in regards to their Trail Tech Vapor. I have been through hell with this f***in thing. I have even gone as far as setting up a 12v battery to run my computer off of so it has consistent power.

Every time I rev my shee the computer registers a tach reading... even without the tach plugged into the head unit. As best I can tell the power wire is picking up interference somewhere along the line and transmitting to the computer which is causing the computer to reset. My computer and lights are on a different circuit than my ignition. I split my wiring harness and did a clean rewire. I will post on this thread as soon as I find a solution to this problem. Until then I would say... If you are reading this, BUY A VECTOR. I am ten hours into this, what I thought would be simple project, with no sign of light. I have made zero progress, any advice or solutions are welcome.

P.S. I am pretty sure it is not a head unit issue. I drove to trail-tech and swapped out with a known good head unit. I am still having the same issues.

Put a set of risistor plugs in. BR8ES see what that does. I was getting a tach reading with out the lead pluged in to the vapor when I was running non resistor B8ES. Peggin when you reve it sounds like the tach setting needs to be set to 2 pulses per RPM.

How do you have the tach picup wired? To the orange and black wire on the coil or did you wrap the red wire around the plug wire?
