Pros and cons of a twist throttle

All I ride is the dunes and some drag racin. After a half day of dunin I start growing a big vagina on my thumb and I end up having to push the throttle with the palm of my hand, so I'd like to go twist throttle. Are there any good reasons not to???

The main thing that I've been told about them, is when the front end comes up in the rough stuff on a Banshee, it gets really hard to get out of the gas, because it rolls your wrist back, adding more throttle. There's a lot of difference between a Banshee with a twist throttle, and a dirt bike with a twist. The dirt bikes are a lot lighter, and easier to handle, than a Banshee. Try one of the extended thumb throttles. I've got one, and really like it.

I would suggest getting somethings to make the throttle easier to push vs. getting a twist. You can cut the carb spings, and get a good throttle cable and that will make it push easier and have less fatigue on your thumb. I dont like twists, they are hard to control in whoops and wheelies IMO. I would stick with the thumb.

it will depend a lot on your riding habits , i run a twist when we go out to the hatfeild mckoy trails and ride 300 miles or so to keep my thumb from ripping off , and when im competitive i run a thumb for more control with cut slide springs and always a clean cable .

Some people like the twist and some don't.. if you're not sure about it you probably wont like it. Usually the guys who ride bikes like the twist but it is alot more difficult to control on a quad than it is on a bike. On bikes you hold on more with your legs... on a quad you use your hands more. I tryed one for a while and even though I used to ride a bike I found it very hard to control. On smooth trails or roads it was fine but when you got into rough stuff you would end up going on off on off a lot. I switched back to a thumb throttle but I got one off a Honda 400ex and it is way better than the stock Yamaha one. It doesn't feel any softer but I don't get a sore thumb at all any more. I think it is just a different angle or something... but it is WAY better. I got mine off e-bay for cheap. I also tryed an extended lever from Cascade on my girlfriends Banshee... it worked ok too but it was kinda long. I sold it to a friend of mine and he loves it... may just have to get used to it.

all i ride is quads and i love my twist. you can hang on tighter in the rough stuff. i ride quads with thumb throttles too and the throttle control in the whoops seems similar to me. i ride dunes and love the tight whooped out sections in the trees.

i love my twist throttle but i always tell people looking into one that they are not for amatures. you need to have a strong right arm with a twist to keep from rolling on the throttle in certain conditions and always remember where your clutch is. they do have a tendancy to get away from people if there not used to them but if you always remember that you have a clutch then the bike cannot get away from you. my buddie broke his leg full on in half because of his twist throttle because he got in a hairy situation and tensed up and held on for dear life and powered into a tree, if he would have just pulled the clutch he would have been alright...if your not sure and have some extra cash try a terry cable dual gasser, it's a twist and a thumb throttle all in one housing. you push a pin to switch between the two so you can switch on the fly. there like $120 but there billet and come in red, blue and alluminum...
