My plug chop

Recommended Posts

I would say it looks a tad on the lean side. When I do my plug checks/chops I usually cut them because you get the most accurate reading like that. Id rather cut the threads and make sure im not running lean better to be safe than sorry.

What you need to do is warm the bike up.

Pull the plugs and put brand new ones in.

Go throught 1-6 and hold it WOT for a few seconds in 5th and 6th.

Then pull the clutch,Kill the bike, and coast to a stop.

Get back to the shop and cut the threads off.

Then after that post the pics up.

This will give you a more accurate idea of where you jetting is at.

Ok...yeah it pulls hard up top and dosent cut out or seem lean so i geuss im good for now i think  will get some 160-162's just to be safe and see whats up.

Ok i have seen that. and i do every step except for the actual "chop" of the threads and coast fully to a stop (whats the point of the coast to a stop step) i usally coast for a sec or two then skid into where my truck is parked. ....so i guess i will do that when i get my tie rod and end that i bent yesterday.

Thanx guys.

About 3 hours of hard riding.

Doesn't sound like every step there...3 hours on plugs will tell you absolutely squat....

You don't need to cut the threads off if you have a light and can look down into the plug...look how thick the ring is..and it's color.

Has to be new or completely cleaned up plugs (preferrably new) to see the ring on them.......

Here is a pic of what my chop looked like with NEW plugs, notice the ring. Slight bit lean.....

Ok so your saying there should be a 2 mm tan ring on the base of the porcilin and clean white all the way up on top? I like mine a bit on the rich side!

Yes, if you do the chop correctly the only mark on them should be the tan ring at the base and it should be white the rest of the way. A ring just a bit darker than that pic that I put up is what you are looking for. Then you know your mains are dialed in for that temp/humidity/elevation. That link that dajogejr put up is where I learned to do plug chops from.
