Is the Shee a good Trail Quad

Recommended Posts

Hi, I live in southern michigan and ride alot of trails (By trails I dont mean rocky trails with big obstacles but trails that are cleared and mowed) The trails hav little tight turns and pretty descent straight aways. I have a few of questions is the banshee a good trail quad? If not why not?

To make it a trail quad what wuld you do to it with just simple bolt on parts? ANY help would be great.

pt mids give off a massive bottom and mid if you give it a lower gearing and possibly a 2into 1 carb kit may help with more bottomend also......also check into a woods port job that would top it off nicely along with some good rubber you`d have a nice trail bike

Can it be a good trail quad? Sure why not.

Is it the best (smartest) choice? probably not.

Even so, its still fun as hell. I mostly ride nothing but trails, and have no problems keeping up with 4 strokes. But it requires more effort to muscle the banshee around. It tends to push in the turns, whereas the newer quads turn like they're on rails.

As far as having low end power, not necessary. Learn how to ride and you'll never need it. Powerband width and how fast it comes on make more of a difference than where the power is at. Trying to extract low rpm power from a banshee is pointless, its not a 4 stroke, is a twin 2 stroke. Its meant for hi-rpm.

yeah i trail ride mine sometimes too, if you know where the power is (mid-top) & how to keep it there (little bit of shifting) its an absolute blast & i keep up with 4-pokes n/p, like ^they^ said... just a little more effort !

Agreed daworriorman its a twin cylinder 2-stroke which means all power is Mid-Top

Suspension is the best upgrade in my opinion. No sense in having all that power if you cant get it to the dirt. I ride mostly open trails like you, usually they are very sandy. I have a whole new front end and g-force axle. The difference is unreal. Im having to return my PT mids because they are for a j-arm shee but I will be getting some new(ish) ones soon. The shee is meant for high-end power, but if you can give it some low-end itll be a killer if you ask me. I love having my shee on trails, hit that lightswitch powerband and just slide right around corners. Im geared one tooth down in the front and it helps bigtime for those big stumps and logs.

To make a good trail quad your gonna need two things:

New shocks and Bottom end.

This is what is done to my bike, and it makes a ton of torque and mid power.

Dynoport 2 into 1 pipe with ultra quiet silencer.

Dynoport Port job.(yes dynoport does port work for the 2 into 1 pipe).

2 into 1 trinity intake with 35mm pwk and K&N pod filter (you may want to run an airbox though)

Stock reed cages with carbon tech low-mid reeds.

Flywheel lightened. (rs heavier magnet flywheel).

Cascade Heavy duty clutch kit.

+4 timing advanced.

Pro design head with 20cc domes on 92 octane pump gas (155 psi comp).

13/46 gearing.

Wiseco Pro lite pistons.

I ride the sand, but I guess my next purchase will be front shocks. My birthday is coming up though....HEHE....HONEY?

all I ride is trails for the most part and there are a couple key factors you are going to need.

1. Your pipes. I run LRD because they tuck nicely into the frame where I've seen a lot of PT mids get dented pretty bad (once saw one that kept the cylinder barely firing). I run a lot of rocky crazy terrain (hatfield-McCoy trails) but if you run pretty much in the open without a ton of rocks, pt mids are a good pipe. The LRD's are adjustable in which they adjust as to where your powerband comes on. They have a very smooth powerband hit over a couple hundred rpm (more like a 4stroke) which make them very smooth in the woods, and you can adjust them to keep it in your sweet spot for your riding style. Basically instead of adjusting your riding to your pipes, you can adjust your pipes to your riding style and habits. That and they have the top end of T5's.

2. reed system. Ideally go for some vforce2's or 3's but if you are on a budget, get some dual stage epoxy boyeson's. The stock reeds flat out suck for responsiveness. Put new reeds in over stock and it'll be like riding a new quad.

3. Suspension. I run a +2 setup with works tripples with rezzies and offset rims in the front and back. I keep my back end a little smaller than my front end which has helped me turn in tight areas a lot better. They say not to do it because it'll make your front end loose at high speeds, but i've personally never noticed a problem. The extra stability and better shock is amazing compared to stock, I'd never go back to it again. I wouldnt be able to with the type of riding I encounter.

4. Compression and timing. I boosted both some and it seems to run a lot smoother and the extra compression has given it more torque down low. The extra power all around is nice when you need it.

5. Ditch the air box lid and get a foam filter. I've had so many problems with K&N's having dirt and crap in my intake system. I ride in coal sometimes too and their is always coal soot in my intake tract with a K&N. Get a outerwears cover in place of the air box lid and it'll keep most everything out of the airbox.

6. When you finally go there, get a good woods port. I got mine with a little lift for the extra power on the top end. I didnt want to sacrifice low end power, but when I hit the open trails I wanted to be able to really rev it out. You can go with some taperbored 30mm carbs before the portwork and feel an increase in power, but you'll really feel it with the portwork. The stock carbs just kinda suck compared to a good aftermarket flowing carb.

also if you ride with 4strokes and depending how long and far you go out. Think about getting an oversize tank. I've got a 5.5 and can run all day long with the 4strokes now without refueling. They actually run out of fuel before me now. We'll all strap 2.5 gallons on our back in back packs (and empty them into tanks every chance we get) and go out from camp at dawn, and not return until dusk. The one trail we ride has a gas station at the one trail entrance, so I'll bring exta oil in one gallon increments to refuel.

Kick up pegs, odi lock on grips, handlebar lighting so it'll point where your going, I run mudsharks in the rear and havent found a better hooking tire that will hook when the edges wear off the tire. They are a little soft but hook until they are beat. They stand up to rocks pretty good too. I run kevlar lined pure sports bandits in the front. I've tried tons of tires and they all just spin when the edges wear off. Except realtors....but thats a different story.
