450 shock and a arm

with the yfz a arms installed it seem that the shock is touching the back of the top a arm. on the banshee with the 450 a arms youhave to flip the top arm to make it work. but on the stock 450 the top a arm is flipped the other way?

 

It is close, but as long as your frame mounts/frame are not damaged, and provided you trimmed the A-arms to specification they will clear. I have about 1/4" on each side (left vs. right) with no clearance issues. I have also seen bent shocks as well, which could be another possible area for problems. :confused:

Please Correct me if I am wrong, but it looks like to me that the lower shock mounting position on this conversion puts the shocks outward more than the Banshee was designed for, possibly causing too soft a ride and lowering the front ride height. What would happen if you moved the lower mounts in to put the shock angles back to stock, if they are out ?. I would be willing to guess that you would even gain some shock to a-arm clearance.

 

Hey, 2003LimitedBanshee, I would like to purchase one of these conversions from you hopefully sometime this summer. I have to get my RZ top end back from Passion first though.

You are right that the shock angle is greater with the 450 A-arms installed as compared to stock, but a couple of things. Firstly, a greater shock angle (to a limit of course) is actually preferred in suspension geometry as it allows for more wheel travel with the same stroke shock. Second, modifying the lower shock mounting position would entail a significant amount more work and really would make this conversion less desirable. Third, when mounted on the Banshee, the 450 upper arms are mounted so that the straight tube of the a-arm is to the back, therefore moving the shock mount inboard would not gain you any shock to a-arm clearance. I'm not meaning for any of those statements to be attacking, so please don't take them as such.

Thanks for the explanation, it is greatly appreciated. :beer: I was looking at the possibilities of this swap a couple of years ago but never pursued it though. I am not trying to pioneer anything by any means but I am trying to build in my own eyes the "Banshee" that Yamha should be building now, and I am trying to keep it mostly Yamaha production parts ( RZ jugs of course ) minus the Rocket pipes and Passion 12 Port. Would it be possble to regain the factory ride height with this set up by adjusting the sag adjusting nuts on the shock bodies or is there not enough adjustment ? Could you also send me some more pics from top view, side, back, and some up close ?

I just finished the yfz a-arm install with shock, and my shocks are also touching the upper a-arm, only barely. Also it seems as though the shocks ahve hardly any tension as I adjusted the spring about half way with only my hand spinning. Any help on this would be great.
