chris1992
sooo... yea... anyway i was working on my banshee today cause for some reason, once again it was running like shit.... and i couldnt figure out why,,, So i take the sparkplugs off... left one is fine.. right one isnt... right one is soaked.. and its spitting unignited fuel out the right exaust. so, connect the cap.. kick it over.. no spark.. turns out one of my spark cap wires got frayed... ok so i was like.. no big deal. i put some soder on it, heat shrink, and electrical tape just in case... now.. keep in mind.. ive been running it for some time, trying to figure out the problem. i suppose this is partly my fault.. but without thinking.. i start it up... idles for a sec.. starts to warm up.. i was like ok! problem fixed no big deal... i decided to take it up the street.... as soon as i hit the gas, it starts revving WOT. i was like.. o shit! so i hit the kill switch.. NOTHING. i was like.. ooo no not again( cause this happend to me once before,) so i remove the spark plug caps... still nothing.. revving crazy still... then i start to hear like this pinging sound coming from the pipe.. And all of a sudden.. next thing i remember is im laying on the ground, my friend and my gf are standing over me, and the banshee was still reving.. it died down a few seconds after... but it didnt sound pretty while it was.. i knew something was wrong. They rush over.. ask me if im ok, i said i had a bad pain in my leg... I look down... And my leg is gushing.. soo.. they take me to teh hospital. my gf was a little spooked. So apparently, what had happend is that it had pumped so much unignited fuel into the exaust pipe, that it became a pool in the lower part. ( i have stockers) then somehow... maybe heat, maybe a flame, It ignited it, causeing an expliosion. Theres nothing left of my exaust, 7 stiches in my leg, my left cylinder siezed cause of the lack of fuel, the right one got shrapnel in it from the explosion, im still not feeling too good, i got some metal in my eye, etc... Now all i can be thankful for, is that by some chance of luck, i stepped back a few feet to let it die out, like i knew it eventually would... Just to like.. sit back and watch.. so i was 8-9 feet from it... thank god... cause it was a big enoguh explosion to have my friend and gf inside able to hear it from my garage. so now im boned. I gotta buy all this stuff.. and new exaust.. and my leg hurts like HELL. they had to remove the shrapnel in some quick surgery. In was embedded an inch and a half into my leg. thank god no permanent injuries. woot. i wanted to know.. if i hadnt been running my fuel at 50:1 would it still have exploded? I was thinking if i ran it at like 24:1 that the amount of oil wouldnt have let it explode... it really freaks me out that i coulda been killed. i might even get a story in the news =) This has got to be the crazyiest thing thats ever happend to any banshee owner.. im tellin u. Ill try and get some pics up later of the damage and my stiches.... If i can get my antique camara working. I have to say that i do think this is all my fault.. i didnt think things through... i should have thought about it,,, and i can only thank whoevers watchin out for me up there. Sry for the novel. fastbanshee8
It sounds like you're lucky to be alive, and not missing body parts, or your sight, let alone still have your Banshee, although it needs some new parts. Your mixture ratio on gas to oil, wouldn't have mattered. It's not the liquid that explodes, it's the fumes. A full container of gas is less likely to explode, than an almost empty one. There's less room for the gas to change, and expand into vapor form, where it's more than likely going to explode, with an ignition source. Hopefully, this was a lesson learned, and you can prevent someone else from getting hurt, in the same manner. Get well soon, and get the Banshee back in running condition. KaosBanshee44
Damn that sucks man for your body and your Banshee. I'm 23 years old and just found out yesterday that i may have to have surgery on my lower back. I fell out the back of a Yamaha Rhino and landed right on my back on the pavement. Well evedently the fluid that runs in my spine busted and formed a pocket right above my tailbone. I go Friday for a cat scan and there gonna determine if it's connected to my spine or if it isn't. Let's hope it isn't.

BenBB
Holy fucking shit!! Dude that's insane, you gotta post pictures. I wouldn't feel bad about it happening though, it coulda happened to anyone...gas+spark=boom I'll definitely keep any eye on the exhausts for unburnt fuel from now on
thelmuffinman
So what caused the problem?
fastrthnu
your mix doesnt matter much. and a puddle of fuel doesnt explode, a puddle of fuel will stay on fire though. fuel has to be misted or vapor to explode.

Meat
wow thats a pretty crazy story. good to hear your ok. In all my years I'v never heard of this happening. When I got my 250r about 3 years ago, the guy I bought it from told me that the floats are set a little high and it will leak gas out the overflow if I leave the gas petcock on. Well one day I parked the quad with the gas on and came back a few days later. No gasoline under the quad at all. In fact It didnt even cross my mind about the floats and the petcock. So I hop on the quad and step down on the kickstarter and its rock solid. Won't budge. I was like "WTF, I just bot this quad and its locked up allready !!" , just about that time the kickstarter started to move downward, I could move the piston, just barely, but it was moving, a little more effort and I got the piston to TDC. So now the pistons moving up and down with the kickstarter, but it was real hard to move the piston. After one complete cycle of the piston it got alot easier to kick, and the more I worked on moving the piston up and down, the easier it got. So after 5 minutes of wrestling with the kickstarter, I started to give it some real kicks. It wouldnt start. Just about that time I could hear fluids.... in my exhaust pipe. Coupla kicks later the gas was rocketing out my silencer every time I kicked. The first squirt of gas that came out the silencer shot atleast 10 feet, I had the kill switch off BTW. It took me about 30 good solid kicks till the gas stopped shooting out my silencer. No explosions, but its a similar story to yours.
peterlocal22
this may be a stupid q but if do you have a Tors eliminator kt. Because shouldnt the TORS prevented the banshee from reving so high at a constant rate? t
chris1992
naw my tors is removed. it doesnt matter because what happens is, cause this happned before, is that so much fuel gets into it, and it revs so high that its able to keep the spark plug at an amazingly high temp, and goes at a high enough rpm, allowing it to ignite the fuel without a spark. its happned to a few people on here. racer
i might even get a story in the news =) for the love of offroaders through out the country, be VERY careful with what you say on tv. The last thing the media needs to hear is about how your quad randomly blew up. Congrats on being safe though, heal up quick.

I wouldnt tell em anything. there was a fire out here off I75 in the everglades and they tried blaming it on quads, I was like OH NO! There goes more riding spots. It was out where its nothing but water and only air boats can go (saw grass on top of water) stupid!
