RING GAP BIG! SOMEONE HELP PLEASE!

Recommended Posts

hey guys,

well I bought a set of port and polish jugs off a guy on ebay, then I bought a 0.25 piston and ring set so I brought the cylinders to get bored over. When I picked them up everything looked fine,so I just brought them home. I just found out about that ring gap so I measured them and its about 0.25!!!isnt it suppose to be 0.12??

anyway so that kind pisses me off but then I also checked the piston clearance on the sides and I hear its suppose to be 0.04 and I have 0.10 if anyone knows what would fix this, im thinking bigger pistons.....the pistons and rings are WSM.

someone please help!!

your ring gap should be .012. Are you squaring the ring in the bore by pusing 'em down with the piston. I line up the lower ring groove on the piston with the mating surface of the cylinder to make sure the ring is level in the bore. If that doesn't help, take them back to shop and tell them to measure piston and cylinder. If they bored ot too big tell them they are buying you a new piston kit and reboring the cylinders to the new pistons(for free). And get wiseco pistons next time.

.012" is the minimun for ring end gap... we run ours at .018"-.020" it's better to have too much than too little. If you are at .025 now that would be ok but your bigger problem is having .010" piston clearance... that is too much. It is also why your ring gap is big as well. You better get another set of pistons the next size up and have your cyl's rebored.

running that ring gap on that bore size is a waste of compression. it is perfectly safe to run .010 to .012 gap running .018 and .020 is way over kill. your to the point where it can effect the performance of the motor.

ok guys, well I went back to that local shop and I had messed up on the piston gap, ive only got .03-.04 so thats good but what ended up happening is that the wsm piston rings didnt match the pistons, the gap was0.25 which is retarded, so I called up WSM adn they are sending me some 0.5 rings for free, plus they are paying shipping to canada!! awsome service...anyway..that brings me to this question ..do u guys think that the 0.5 rings will fit tight on the 0.25 pistons?? my local shop seems to think so.....

thanks FOR ALL replies guys!!

I would be more concerned with that piston clearance. I think you stated like .040 clearance and you should be .0025-.0035 when measured properly. We try to hold ring gap down because it affects bottom end performance. However, anything over about 6K rpm and you can pretty much remove the second ring because the piston speed is fast enough to pump up effectively. I would try to hold that ring gap to manufacturer spec which should be .012 for a stock bore piston. We would replace rings with a .025 gap! That is just too much.
