87sheerips
OK, went riding this weekend, and after we did the 50 mile loop, she started to smoke a bit out of the right cylinder, and smelled like shit. I changed the plugs, and 2 minutes later the smoke returned. So i went back to camp, tested compression which is fine, both still at 165. to my knowlegde, it smells like im burning tranny oil, so you think seal is going bad???? The bike still ran perfect with this happening, and i need to get this fixed by memorial weekend! Please help me out on this one, i need to get in the cases asap if need be.. Thanks guys.... fastbanshee8
It sounds like your crank seal is wasted. Time for a tear down.
87sheerips
It sounds like your crank seal is wasted. Time for a tear down. Yea thats what i figured. Pretty inexpensive fix right? Besides the cost of my labor! And ill have to completetly tear the motor down to get to the seal huh.... Ive never done one before, can someone explain this seal, tips on removing/installing, and what the seal does exactly...
Malott 1
This might help. http://www.bansheehq.com/forums/index.php?...splitting+cases Lift the crank out and remove the nut on the end of the crank. Remove the gear and this will allow access to the seal. It's not as hard as it sounds. Just take your time. Malott 1
It's hard to say what might be the cause till you get it apart. While you have it down you might if you haven't already have the crank checked out and welded.

I say this bottom end has maybe 30 hours on it MAX since the last rebuild... This is weird, all i can do is dig in and find out what cause this.. Thanks for the help bud... swrbansheeboy
it's kinda hard to figure out why a seal took a shit except if theres grooves on the end of the crank. sounds like thats your problem but you could always do a leak down test first just to confirm thats the problem before you strip everything apart. i'd invest in a complete set of seals since your in there anyway. plus it's a good oppertunity to inspect your shift forks and gears and tranny shafts for wear while your in here... badassbanshee479
sounds like a crank seal, you can split the cases with out taking the cylinders off if ya want, just undo everything and turn the engine up side down, then pull the bottom half off of the top half. the crank and tranny will stay in the top half. Make sure to put some whit lithium grease on the lip of the seal where the drive gear rides on. will make the seal last longer.
87sheerips
Well i have found the culprit.... The fucking basket is shattered, along with 4 clutch plates. A nice piece of basket got lodged between the gear and seal shredding it to shit. I got so lucky, there is so much metal, all the gears are mint. SO really, im happy with what happened. Just dont know why the basket blew out, heres some pics, ill get more carnage up later.... SO badass, if you know anyone with a basket setup, i need this shit so i can ride memorial weekend. Ill be able to fix it if i can get these parts!! Thanks in advance for anyone that can help me!! Edited May 15, 2007 by 87sheerips

Fast Racing has a good billet basket, and his prices are great, and his shipping time/customer service is excellent. I'm running one of his baskets, I think the brand is Magnum. Ill be able to fix it if i can get these parts!! Thanks in advance for anyone that can help me!! Damn, I was going to say FOD killed your seal but got here too late. Actually most of the bike we get with bad RH seals are because of failed RH crank bearings that cut up the seal. Your case is "special". The reason you did not kill your gears is because all that FOD is Aluminum and the gears are case hardened steel. I would be more worried about bearings at this point. Sometimes they just fail but clutch chatter will do it. Did you by chance grind on your basket to smooth the grooves in it? We se this a bunch and this is the EXACT outcome of it. What happens is plates don't get loaded equally, one breaks, pieces lodge in the basket sideways and it all crumbles. We call this justification for modification. Time for some billet!! Screaming Yellow Zonker
Damn dude! I remember doing that about 3 years ago. mine was a little worse though. I broke 3-4 fingers off the basket and a couple of friction discs broke apart also. I'm glad you found the problem. Good luck.
