spark plugs

Recommended Posts

I have had a set of B8ES in my bike for almost a year and have not had a problem yet. I think you need to look at your fuel mixture. How about your oil mixture... How is your spark?

Yep, should not be going through plugs. You have something tuning to do.

WOW! with 270 jets my bike would over heat and ping like a SOB. You might be baking those plugs right out of your bike. When my bike was running lean I went through plugs left and right.

well thats the thing when i pull the plugs out....yes there hot but there also real wet and it doesnt seem as if it is running really lean because its really easy to start and the exhaust gives out to much oil to be to lean its actually about right where i want it when i had the jets at 300 its just sucked gas

It has to be your jetting. You say your running K&Ns so I take it your running pods and that calls for bigger mains.

Do you plugs look a little white? They should be nice and tan.

Go up to 300s and see if your spitting oil out of your pipes or the bike is reving to high or breaking up at WOT in the higher gears and coming down and reving out. Running to hot is a big sign too. Thats too rich. If thats the case go a size down and work from there.

Best thing to do would be a plugchop to see where your at on your mains? People always say they would rather run rich than run lean. I dont know why either way your gonna end up frying your pistons. Its best to be dead on at all times. When you figure out where your jetting should be as the weather changes jetting will be a snap everytime after that.

Also when the bike is cold will it start without the choke? Does it sputter while its reving? You may be to fat on your piolets. Check it out and go to 27.5s

I run B8ES and the only time I change them is when Im either taking it slow with kids on the back or I let an inexpirenced rider ride it. If I dident do those things my plugs would last me forever.

What elevation do you ride at?

My 4 mil cub had an air leak the size of the hole in the Titanic...however, it still started real easy...idled fine, etc.

You need to leak down test that bike before you go any further, or else you're just wasting time in my opinion.

All the jetting changes in the world won't help you with an air leak or crank seal leak.

One cylinder not firing until it warms up does not make sense...especially if the jetting is the same in each carb. You have bigger problems...and need to figure those out...

the plugs arent white at all.....there soaked in oil when i pull it out of the left and the right is just alittle black....i dont think it is going to blow a hole in the top of the piston anytime soon it just had a rebuild about 2 aqnd a half months ago and this problem started maybe 2 3 weeks ago

Ok...no problem. Find out the hard way...

I've seen motors smoked in 20 minutes that were "just rebuilt" because the owner didn't take the time to read plugs and take it easy....

I'm not telling you it's not a jetting problem. I'm just telling you to leak test the motor before you waste your time trying to jet it out...when it could be something else...

Just because it's not leaking air doesn't mean a crank seal isn't leaking tranny fluid into the motor...and since the PTO side of the crank has more load on it..it's normally the seal that goes first. It also happens to be the right side....

Also...did you check your reeds for broken, frayed or chips in them??

i know its not the jets...but how can i tell if air is leaking or not....alls i no is the left plugs is soaked even if i pull it out and clean it put it back in kick it a few times and tsake it out it will be soaked again.....its weird....i took off the carbs a few mins ago....and the reeds look good....the right side seems fine too for the last couple of days i dunno maybe i just had some bad gas and it would just pour it all in the from the bowl at once im gonna keep checking it out

Do a search on RNBrad's leakdown tester.

YOu can buy a kit...or...or you can make your own.

It might not be an air leak...if the crank seal is leaking on the PTO side...it's got fluid going through it and all around it...from the tranny....

And since your plugs are "oily"...this makes sense.... See what i'm getting at?
