snackeycakes
Hello to everyone, I am a new Banshee forum member and of course a newbie here. But being a newbie doesn't mean I haven't ridden Banshees, I just don't own one yet. I'm looking to buy one for next season at the dunes in Glamis. 1. Are any years better than the other in regards to engines, problems, etc? What to look out for? 2. Being a CR500 two stroke rider, I am painfully aware of two stroke maintenance. So, do the cranks have to be rebuilt often? And how much does that cost, assuming you remove the engine and have a shop split the case, or is splitting the case easy and you just have the crank re-done? 3. Pistion and heads. Are we looking at new pistions and a cylinder bore often? How much for that type of work? 4. Any suggestions on what to look for in a used Banshee? Mods, Toomey pipes, etc. 5. How about a way to tell if the cranks or pistons need work before buying? Other than a compression test. 6. What types of suspension are recommended for a 230lb rider in mostly dunes? 7. Does any one have a stock 2000 Banshee bought for wife, never ridden and in perfect shape for sale? Kidding, I'm sure they are a pipe dream!!!! I'm sure I'll have a thousand other things to ask, but just want to find a good, reliable, used banshee 1st. The one I rode was a mostly stock 2000. Most fun I've ever had at the dunes. Though my thumb got sore by day 3. A twist throttle will be installed on what I buy. Any insight or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance......... snackeycakes "Dude, snackeycakes? !TWISTER!
Hello to everyone, I am a new Banshee forum member and of course a newbie here. Are any years better than the other in regards to engines, problems, etc? What to look out for? Same engine to 1987 to 2003, they changed somehing in '03 can't remember. 2. Being a CR500 two stroke rider, I am painfully aware of two stroke maintenance. So, do the cranks have to be rebuilt often? And how much does that cost, assuming you remove the engine and have a shop split the case, or is splitting the case easy and you just have the crank re-done? Never heard about crank rebuilding on a stock 'shee. You can get trued and welded if you want for about 150$ 3. Pistion and heads. Are we looking at new pistions and a cylinder bore often? How much for that type of work? Not really 4. Any suggestions on what to look for in a used Banshee? Mods, Toomey pipes, etc. If you buy a modified 'shee, be sure it was done proprelly. 5. How about a way to tell if the cranks or pistons need work before buying? Other than a compression test. crankcase pressur test? :ermm: 6. What types of suspension are recommended for a 230lb rider in mostly dunes? If you have the money, Elka sell costume suspension for your weigth. 7. crbanshee
first off welcome to the HQ you have come to the right place for banshee help.. #1 the banshee has not changed in many many years and the motor is the same in all of them. they did change a few things way back when but not the motor. #2maintenance is normal of any 2 stroke. #3 crank and top end. top end just replace as needed as with any 2 stroke and you can have the crank welded and get great life out of it. cost on a top end depends on who does it average from what i have found is about $600 parts and labor. welding the crank cost depends on who you go to. #4 look for normal things as with any bike. the person selling it will give you alot of info, check for anything that looks like it might not fit just right, plastics tank things like that will tell you if it has been wadded up and is bent any place. also feel out the guy selling it if its a private seller. look to see if his cars and other toys look like he takes good care of them that will tell you alot. #5 suspension..take the stock rear shock to your local suspension shop and have the shock valved to your weight and the terrain you will ride most.. front..i recomend a nice set of elka shocks and maybe a new set of +2 a arms to go with the shocks.. alba has a prety good deal on the whole kit its under $1000 #6 mods by past owner. i would look to see what was done most guys dont get too far into the motor, pipes jetts and maybe reeds. but cool heads are one of the things i see alot of guys going with lately. check out what was done and who did it that will tell you alot. i know i missed alot but you will get a prety good responce on here so i know anything i missed someone will pick up and post for you..
