imflyinbiya
Hi all, I am very happy to say that I recently became a banshee owner with my 91. I went for a weekend ride after getting it, and now doing some work in preparation for next weekend. Anyway, I wanted to change the oil. So, I checked the fluid (right in the middle of the hash mark at bottom of dipstick). Drained the old fluid, replaced the crush washer with a new one, and started to fill it with fresh fluid. At 1.5qts, the fluid level is halfway up the dipstick!??! Is that normal? Not sure what to do, but I let ALL the old oil drain for like 10min (on a level surface). Please HELP?! Thank you! -B0
Toomey Banshee
The Clymer manual actually says it takes 1.6 quarts. I usually fill mine up with about a quart and a half and check it when I'm riding. You're ok.

okbeast
Did you warm the bike up at all b4 checking?
imflyinbiya
Did you warm the bike up at all b4 checking? No. I checked it cold (it registered middle of hash), drained it, filled it and now it registers like stated above. So tomorrow I should start the bike for a bit and let it heat up and recheck? Thanks guys, you rock! BTW - I love this thing.
okbeast
I believe the Clymers says to warm it up b4 checking because it will suck some into the tranny that will stay in there. It's really easy to see this if you know someone with a lock-up. But ya try that and see what happens.
Toomey Banshee
If only added 1.5 quarts and you're sure you drained all the old fluid out just let it sit over night, start it up and let it warm up for about 5-10 minutes and you should be good to go. imflyinbiya
Thanks to the both of you. I will let it sit overnight, and start / warm up the bike in the am and recheck.
moneybags
Did you screw the dipstick in when you checked it? I am not 100% sure but I dont think you do it like that. Just wipe dirt away first, unscrwe dipstick, wipe off, put it in, pull it out, read oil level. Maby that was for my lawnmower.
fastrthnu
maybe a previous owner put a stick in from a different bike. If the level was halfway on it not screwed in,. it would be showing full screwed all the way in. I always run my bike up the street real quick to right before a change to suspend any crap that may have settled to the bottom that will pickup when the new oil is moved around. Screaming Yellow Zonker
when you refill the trans you are actually just filling the side cover. you need to buzz that thing around for a few min and let the fluid find a new home inside the case and not just in the side cover. with 1 and 1/2 quarts you have plenty. The Yamaha Manual says to do it just like you said: unscrew dipstick, wipe off, put it in, pull it out, read oil level. You don't screw it back in..you just let it rest against the case.... I always wondered what was the right procedure to read the correct oil level on the stick!! Edited April 15, 2007 by jayzx750

What he said^ I also tip the bike up on one side with blocks just to get every bit that I can out. I usually end up putting 1.75 quarts in it & it will register right on the full mark anytime that I check it before a ride.
350BANSHEE350
well now you guys got me worried so i went to the garage and checked my oil, i didnt warm it up. when i screw it in to check it it says its full but then i tried just setting it on the case (not crewing it in) and it didnt even get any oil am i low? or should i warm it up and then check it? i dont know how much i put in because i put 1q or yamalube 4 in and then i estimated 300ml of yamalube4 and then i estimated 200ml of lucas oil stuff that i mixed i think im going to just pick up a messuring cup and do it in that and then put it in the tranny
imflyinbiya
Well, I took it up and down the street at few times and rechecked it.... low. SO, I added more until it was perfect on the dipstick (when screwed in) and it took a little over 1.5 quarts. Not sure about you guys, but if I just set the dipstick on the case, it doesn't even register. I am guessing it would take about 2qts to fill it up to register on the dipstick while not screwed in... Anyway, thanks all!
