HOW TO CLEAN RUSTED PIPES

Recommended Posts

wire cup brush or wire wheel and a corded or cordless drill.

hand sanding would work also...but why, if you have power tools.

bare metal in 20m for 1 full expansion chamber.

then wipe them down with kerosene or gasoline or something that evaporates quickly.

then wipe again with a clean/new terry towel and paint 'em with HT paint.

then perform the heat cycles to cure the paint.

I used a 3M medium duty sanding disk on a power drill to clean mine up before I painted them.

Here's a before/after look:

Like Mullet Man said, do the heat cycles with the high temp paint, if you don't do them right the paint will bubble and peel on the pipe right by the cylinder......mine are peeling but I'm to lazy to repaint them right now.

get a rust remover for chrome, many parts stores have it, wal mart used to carry it as well. Get one of those drill buffers and go to town. I use a fine steel wool to clear up some of the heavier rust spots and then finish it off with the buffing wheel.

If they are beyond saving (a lot of times they look worse then they actually are, usually rust sits on top of the chrome, the tiniest pit will make a big rust mark, and when buffed down, looks like a pin hole that you can barely see.)

But like I said, if its to the point that you rust is flaking and stuff, a wire wheel and some high temp paint would be the way to go.

naval jelly from home depot or lowes.

Murray's, Auto Zone and PepBoys as well...Love this stuff.

scotch bright and a bit of wd40

Use this method too...

Any bad rust, you're gonna have to put some elbow grease into it...get a die grinder with a scotchbrite pad....
