Moving To Portland, Oregon

Recommended Posts

It appears that I will begin raping and pillaging my way to Portland this Sunday. I should be moving into to my new place on Tuesday.

Can someone explain to me what the actual deal is with ATV titles in Oregon? Someone told me you don't have to have them, but I know you are required to a have some sort of permit sticker in the Oregon dunes, so how does that work if the ATV isn't titled or registed?

Thats correct you dont have to title your bikes here. As far as the sticker goes, You can get them at most atv shops they are good for two years. I know for my truck, I need my vin number to get my sticker, I dont remember how I got mine for the shee but I think its just the vin number they need.

Do I need to get an access pass for my truck as well if I am just using it for transportation and camping purposes?

I know that I contacted the forestry department, cause a friend on mine has a bike without a vin or a bill of sale. Anyways they told me all you have to do is give a description of the bike and that is it. You do not need any numbers or anything to get a sticker. Hell I guess you could steal a bike and get a sticker. Maybe that should be changed here, but something no one really bothers with. You could if the bike does not have a vin, go to the state police and they will check the bike for numbers and then issue you a new vin. If that helps?

You have to have one on your truck if it will be on the sand, If you just plan on unloading your bike in the staging areas you dont need one, But if your truck touches the sand without a sticker its a ticket.

Cool. That's pretty much what I figured.

I am still a little confused about the ATV title situation in Oregon. The way I understand it is that you can get one from the DMV, but it's not necessary to buy the sand permit sticker. Is that correct? :thanks:

Just called the local atv shop and they said, You dont have to title your bikes as of right now but next year they are going to start making it mandatory again and even if its titled you still need a sticker, Hope this helps if you have any other Q's I can give them a call again.

Cool. I have or plan on having a title for all my stuff anyway. Due some comments made earlier by someone on here, I didn't really understand what the actual deal was, just that it could be avoided currently. :thanks:

Hey Firehead. Welcome ( a little early I know but hey....I'm tryin) to the great northwest! It appears most of your questions have already been answered. But if you need any info on riding the dunes here please pm me and I'll give you my email address. I'll try and find out anything you need to know! i spend most of my time at Sand Lake. It won't be too far of a trek for you to go there sometime. There are plenty of peeps out here that are willing to help you out.

Let me know if there is anything I can do to help ya out. I was in the Navy once and I know how difficult it can be moving to the unknown.

Good luck and I hope to "roost" with ya soon!

I appreciate the welcome. I am not that far off from moving now...............I think I have most of the logistics and planning taken care of. I am reading about the DMV stuff right now and printing out forms so that I can maybe get a head start on some of this stuff. Is the Gresham DMV going to be faster than one of the Portland DMV locations? I suppose I am lucky that I only have one vehicle to be smog tested and only one vehicle that the bank has the title for. I can get Banshee #1 and my truck done in one shot if I get an emission test be fore I brave the DMV. I could get everything done at once, but it sounds like the DMV would like to look at the vehicle's VIN, so I will have to bring the Harley back later. Have any of you guys filled out the Application for Title and Registration form thta you get off the internet before. I am not sure what all I am expected to have completed before I get my nuber called to talk to someone in person at the DMV office.

I guess I am still used to the Washington DMV, even though the drivers license office was at a different location than the title and registration office. Atleast you could walk into the title and registration with nothing but a registration and a smile, then walk back out shortly after, with all you paper work filled out for you and your documents in the mail.

I suppose I should be happy that the worst part of my move is the DMV crap.

Welcome to Portland FireHead!

I live on the hill overlooking Swan Island, let me know if you need any help with anything. There are DMV's and DEQ stations in N and NE Portland.

My friends are going to the Florence dunes April 20-22, staying at Honeyman Park. I'm gonna try and make it down for 1 of those days.

I am going to be living on Halsey Street in the eastern part of Portland. I couldn't fin much of anything to rent with a garage near Swan island. I will have to get used to the commute down I84 in the morning.

Which is the best DMV to go to? Does a DMV employee come and actually check your vehicle or is it just paperwork inside the office? What is the best emissions station to go to? That information will help me out a ton.
