FireHead
thanks jeepman i was looking for some first hand experiance with this problem. im going to go with pro design it just seems odd to me that out of all the after market part out there that there is only 1 band that make impellers oh well have to pay for Quality There are two factors in play here. The PD units are made of more expensive stainless steel and the Mod Quad units are made from aluminum from what I gave been told in this thread. The other factor is that Mod Quad really doesn't have the quipment to making a part like an impeller in an efficient manner, or atleast they didn't the last time I saw inside there shop (it's been a few years now). yamaha04
well the stainless is definatly going to be better but still find it hard to beline and have always wonder why no one else makes them. like you can build a whole bike from nothing if you wanted to ussualy theres atleast 5 difference companies that make the same stuff that you have to choose from. they must take a pretty expencive rig to make them
350shee
me personally i would not buy any type of metal impeller, I have witnessed in several applications where the metal impellers make grooves in the clutch cover where the impeller rides on the clutch cover surface...IMO modquad or pro design needs to make a impeller that flows just like their billet ones, but make it out of a high quality plastic. To complicate the matter further, you don't really need a live tooled CNC lathe (a live tooled lathe costs about twice as much as a standard 2-axis lathe (the live tooling servos can be bloody expensive as wel)) to make many other items in the genre of parts Mod Quad sells. What I am guessing they do is make the impellers in a two setup operation on a vertical CNC mill. The problems you have with this method is that you have a harder time controlling concentricity and roundness. If the Mod Quad impellers are in fact aluminum (I still haven't confirmed that), you have to wonder why they made that material choice. It's not the worst choice, but it seems like the delta in cost between the aluminum and stainless wouldn't be a compelling enough reason to make the decision based purely off that. Like I said before, if you have a problem with a Mod Quad part, you need to call them. They have some of the best customer service around.

I have had more of the OEM impellers disitegrate or melt than I care to think about.

Did someone not say that the Mod Quad unit was made out of aluminum in this thread? If I had to choose to buy one based off that info, I would probably buy the ModQuad unit because I am a cheap bastard and I like to complain about stuff. Pro Design makes a great product. The quality is always there with them. Their stuff is more expensive than others most of the time, but whatever you buy from them will be right the first time. :geek:
