450 engine rebuild how much $

Recommended Posts

that is all you need to replace every season as far as the motor goes? I thought they needed more parts than that.

The horror stories about the high-maintenance on new 4-strokes are just that- STORIES!! If you do regular maintenance like adjusting the valves & changing the oil regularly, they will last a long time. Very few of us race our quads like the pros do.

Well if all your doing is just putting a new top end it should be $200 or less it all depends though,

I had a brand new 04 YFZ 450 and never had to do the top end or anything but that was me, I took care of it and never abused it, i never had any problems with it , its all about how you take care of your stuff if you take care of it good enough it will last forever, I sold my mx modded 450 to get a shee and I wouldnt trade my shee for nothin.

The top-end job should be pretty easy though or you can have a pro do it for a lil extra $

Heres one for you though my friend who has a 04 Honda 450R blew the motor up it was not re-useable so he had to get a new motor and it cost about $2000 or a lil more, My other friend who has a Banshee screwed his motor up and for the new motor, parts and labor and porting it was only $1500, This other guy I know who had a YFZ like mine but abused the hell outta it and didnt take care of it spent like $3000 buying new EVERYTHING.

if you blow up a 4 stroke, your looking at a $1000-2000 to fix it. my buddy just spent $1800 because he broke a rod. it was a 05 yamaha and that was with no labor. a friend rebuilt it for free. when they go, THEY GO! i love my 4 stroke, but i hope it never blows up. i try not to beat the crap outta of it and take very good care of it.

Just a freshen up can be done for under $300. If you go with a cheaper piston, you can get away under $200. I would STRONGLY suggest paying a little more for a good piston. CP pistons have some extra webbing built into the design for additional strength.

I'm rebuilding the top end of my 04 YFZ450 right now. I still had the stock piston in there - changed it as preventative maintenance so I wouldn't end up paying for a complete rebuild. I'd recommend changing it every 100 - 150 hrs of ride time.

CP Piston 12.5:1 - $223.95, head gasket - $35.99, chain tensioner gasket - $1.99 and base gasket - $5.99 - total of $267.92.

Of course, I'm adding some port work and cams but that isn't included in the normal top end rebuild so I didn't include it here.

All I can say is change your oil religiously and don't wait for the motor to blow because it will cost you another $2K if your motor lets loose. You'd be amazed at what a little preventative maintenance can save you in the long run!

All my motor work and parts were done/ordered from DFR DFR Link

I'm curious to see what runs better now - my 4mm stroker Banshee with t-5's, adj timing plate, reeds, K&N pods and stock bore, unported cylinders or my YFZ450 with all the basic bolt-on mods, cams and head porting.
