WHEN DO YOU REPLACE A STOCK CRANK

I have a stock 2001 banshee,well it has fmf sst pipes and a boost bottle but other than that its stock.It has no more than 60 hrs on it.I did a compresion test the other day and it read 90 in each cylnder so i am going to assume its time to rebuil the top end.But what i was wondering is the crank going to be ok?It runs fine and this will be its first top end rebuild,but some of the dealerships say it may be time for a new crank,is this true or are they just tring to rob me like usual.

the stock crank can go out of phase(relationship between the 2) ...

usually you dont have to have it welded in stock form. your crank bearings could have some wear.

when you start playing with compression ie.. milled or aftermarket head..

that causes more stress on your crank.

if your just gonna do top end, its a good time for porting,aftermarket head, all depends on how far you want to take it.

it is good insurance to have crank trued and welded if you are gonna get new bearings.

a good time to figure out what exactly do you want out of motor..

Where i live and ride im lucky to get to 4th gear and to be honest it scares the crap out of me stock,so i think i`ll leave it that way.I think the guys getting 70hp are insane, but what i want to know is after only 60 hours on it could my crank be screwed already?

IMO I wouldnt change it just yet. With your mods you could get several more topend builds before really having to do anything major. Now if you decide to up the compression, port, etc... then i would definitely get a T&W crank.

just had my motor done by jeff at fast...

 

he used my stock crank for the build..

20cc domes I havent checked compression running 93 octane pump gas..

didnt think I need to check jeffs work

 

 

you should be fine on your stock crank.

if your doing a top end that will bring your compression back up.

you might think about checking in to your lower end though.

if you lose your seals that could be the death of your motor.

from what you said your motor does have some age working against it.

death is a strong word but you would be looking at tearing it all down again.

Shit, I will put 60hrs on my banshee in two weekends of riding. ROFL

 

There are alot of folks around where I live that have never put 60 hours on their bike total.

 

In answer to the original question, I personally replace the stock crankshaft when it's broken. Although for reasons that I won't get into, I used to break alot of crankshafts. :whistling:

Should tear it down anyway and check the bearings and seals just to be safe. If you have a bad crank seal and you throw a new top end on it chances are you will be putting another new top end on it again. Might as well take a look at the bottom while you are doing it all. Better safe than sorry.

Do a leakdown test before you pull the jugs off. That will tell you the shape of your seals. If you find a leak and end up splitting the cases, then you may decide to have the crank done at the same time!

 

This is a good point. If you feel that your top end went south due to an air leak, then you need to do this. :thumbsup:
