Is this a good price?

My local bike mechanic (very reputable shop) is currently working on my 03 Banshee. The guy knows his stuff and I trust him greatly. He builds Pro Mod drag race bikes and is a top notch head porter and machinist. He is going to port my stock cylinders, supply and install new forged pistons, rings, service hone my cylinders, install 19cc domes and rejet my carbs if needed. He is going to charge me $850 to do everything. Is this a reasonable price? The work being performed is in addition to what I already have on the bike, see my sig for list of mods.

Also, what kind of HP numbers can I expect, running a 50/50 mix on pump/race gas?

My other important question is, should I ditch my FMF pipes and put Toomeys on? Is the switch going to be worth spending the money? I mean I could re-coup some money back from selling the FMF's to pay for the Toomeys, but HP and seat of the pants difference do you guys feel it's worth the switch?

Thanks in advance...

If this guy knows his stuff, that's not a bad price.

Figure GOOD Porting is 300 to 450. Pistons/top end and gaskets another 160. Domes, 65 to 70.

Jets are a couple bucks...

So, you're looking at a couple hundred for labor, which...if he does that good of a job, it's worth it.

Make sure he is going to stand by his work. Plenty on here will tell you to save money and do it yourself, but...that's up to you if you want to learn now, or learn later...:)

A good port job with those pipes and stock carbs, probably high 50s to low 60's.

Here's the thing. WHAT kind of port job is he doing? MX/dune port, FMF or T5 will be fine, you might feel a tad bit in the seat of the pants. Dune/Drag port, get some Shearer or CPIs...

What kind of carbs? A good strong port job will be choked a little by stock carbs.

What kind of riding do you do?...

There's a ton of questions here, ones I hope your builder asked YOU before he started any work...

Thank you for the quick response! I actually think $850 doesn't sound like a lot of money to me... I'm good with that price.

OK, lets go through this item by item.

1. Yes, he will stand by all his work. I have been dealing with him for several years now. He has been dying to get his hands on my Banshee to do some porting. He works on a lot of Banshee's here on Long Island. With my business, I have hardly any time to go riding, let alone start working on my own shit.

2. We are doing a MX/Dune port. I don't require nor do I want a drag port. Here in NY 90% of my riding is in the woods, 5% is out on the street and 5% is open fields.

3. For now, I will remain running the stock carbs. Correct me if I'm wrong, but won't a smaller carb give me more down low torque and overall power and a larger carb (s) will yeild more top end? Top end isn't really a major concern on my Shee as my Fourtrax is my top end bike. Has plenty down low too, but you get my idea.

I really just want to wake up the Banshee, not looking for anything earth shattering. High 50's to low 60's on the HP would be great!

So, going over what I said, do you think I will be fine for now with the FMF's?

Thanks again...

Sound like you did your homework on making the combination work together. The stock carbs will be fine with this setup. The FMF's you have now will work well for all around power.

I agree 100%. The only thing I'd change is going to a 28PWK carb, possibly bored out to 30.

You might feel a little seat of the pants, but...the PWKs are a MUCH better design than the stock "kunis.

Also...you might think of a 35mm PWK two into one due to your trail riding/MX port job. I bet that and those FMFs would compliment that motor quite well.

Yep, I'd say you've done your research as well, I had to ask the questions to make sure you weren't going drag porting to ride trails, or vice versa. There's entirely too many people that want to go fast but go the wrong way about it.

Next up is suspension and tires!!!

Yes fellas, I did my homework... I've been riding 2 strokes since 1989 when my Pops bought me my 1986 250R. I'm no 2 stroke guru, but I know enough to get by.

Hmmmmm, a 2 into 1, Huh... I've actually thought about that! I'm happy now that you guys say that my FMF's will work well. Less money now I will have to spend on the Toomeys. Maybe in the future I'll through some Toomeys on there. As for tires, 2 weeks after I got my Banshee I threw a nice pair of rims and Holeshots on there. I have a spare set of rear rims with paddle tires for the deep snow we get here, when we do get it. I think the Holeshots work OK. Is there another tire out there that is better for trail and open field riding? What about suspension?

woodro77, I live in Centereach and my business is in East Meadow. I own 86 acres Upstate NY where I do all my riding. The shop doing the work on my Banshee is Chuckwagon Racing in Farmingdale. Chuck definitely knows his stuff!!!!!

Ahhhh, I almost bought a house in Miller Place!! When I get my Banshee done we should hook up! Riding on Long Island is dangerous in the sense that it is 100% illegal to ride anywhere on Long Island! I used to ride in Brookhaven State park and the riding was AWESOME! Only thing is you'd have to constantly look over your shoulder for park rangers. They would impound your bike right on the spot!
