Only one cylinder blew up......HELP

Recommended Posts

About a month ago I had D&M, a local banshee shop, do my motor. He fixed the water pump gear, cracked the case and welded the crank, lightened the flywheel, adv my timing and put in a new clutch for me.

While out at glamis for thanksgiving, my banshee keep blowing antifreeze out the front of the radiator.. To me that didn't seem like a big deal since my banshee has been doing that since I bout it 3 years ago. Well anyways day after day I kept refilling the overflow, (the day before I checcked the radiator fluild) Until finally the motor had had enough (4th day of riding) and stalled at the bottom of a bowl.

When we got home we opened up the motor and found that there was absolutly no antifreeze to be found. (other than overflow) Not in the radiator, lines, waterpump ect. We also noticed that D&m used silicone on the head gaskets (good bad?). And finally only the right cylinder blew up, the left however looks fine. WHAT HAPPENED???? ANY help is appreciated...

Are you sure that silicone wasn't yamabond? It is a common sealant used on the cases, base gaskets and even reed gaskets. I would take it back to D&M and let them look at it. From what I hear they are a reputable shop and will probably stand behind it if it is something they did.

It shouldnt be blowing antifreez out the radiator. It is over heating. When you would refill the jug that is all you were doing. While the Radiator kept getting lower and lower until there was nothing left. I would have both cylinders checked out. If you ran it with out antifreeze I would say that both cylinders are going to need work.

No man its silicone we called him and he confirmed it. Yeah were're not taking it back to him  .. We had him do all 3 of our banshees, mine blew, my cousins is making abnormal clicking noises in the clutch case, and the other one began to shot antifreeze out of the radiator just like mine. The thing is I paid him extra to completely check out my banshee and then this shit happened. The last thing I'm going to do is pay him again to fix this . I'm taking my cylinders to kenz....

If the bike starts pushing coolant out it starting to overheat, you are supposed to stop and let the bike cool down, or just cruise into the wind so let the motor cool down. I dont like builders that uses silicone, topgasket seals without using any sealant, if silicon were used and the head gasket sealed, that was not the reason the bike overheated, so its not the builders fault. You should not ignore a bike that pushes out coolant, thats the first sign of overheating. Its probably your own fault for keeping the bike running, it overheated and seized up.

Yamabond or permatex is the only thing i would use on gaskets, although i dont like using bonds.

Anyway good luck.

It could be blowing coolant out because the head gasket was leaking allowing the piston to pressurize the coolant. When your reving the coolant can't circulate and then when you idle the coolant rushes into the cylinder (super cools) and screws the piston up.

You ran the bike out of coolant and bashing D&M for it now. :banghead:

I wasn't able to tell it was leaking that amount while I was riding I never look down, couldn't it feel it neither. When I got to olds I shut it off for about a 1/2 hour and then rode for 5 mins around the bottom of the hill. When I got back it started leaking coolent. I serious doubt that its my fault it got too hot after riding in 3rd gear for 5 mins. ( this is when it had coolent.) I keep refilling after that and it kept spraying. Whether it is D&m's fault directly or slightly I'm still not paying him to fix it.

this may sound like a stupid question, but if he used silicon on the head, did and of it clog the water ports on the clylinders? just asking, because if it did, the the engine would not cool as good because of restricting the water flow, causing it to run hot. may be wrong.

I went into the garage and looked, no it didn't clog the water ports.

Well I took the entire motor down to kenz and hes telling me that the banshee leaned out, then the head gasket blew, then the right side seized. So he s still looking at it to see what caused it to lean out. Its not the carbs since I ran that jetting for about year and half without any problems Any ideas?

I would take it somewhere else! He's telling you it leanedout when you ran that same jetting for a year and a half? Unless there was an air leak that you didn't know of, something else has to be going on.. Stupid question but, have you taken a good look at your radiator itself to make sure it's not corroded? There doesn't seem to be a whole lot to go wrong in the cooling system of a banshee... If all ports are cleared, radiator is good, water pump is good, jetting is good.. There isn't much else that could be causing it to overheat.. Good luck and keep us posted..
