sschevy383
hey guys, i'm running a 03 with t5's, v force 3's, Dyna CDI, Nology coil with hot wires, TOR's removed. Around here the elevation is 300ft...i'm currently jetted at 280 main and stock pilot. I also have the air box drilled with the foam inserts. My motor is currently .040 over, with the stock head milled .020. My shee was running great till i got it up to 1700ft. Obviously it was a little rich, but was running fine... But when i went to let off the gas it would SLOWLY come down... Kinda scary when you are trail riding. If i were to jolt the throttle it would come down normal. It kept getting worse throughout the day. I finally stopped and was toying with it looking for a air leak, and would hold the throttle at 1/2 and let off but it wouldnt stop revving...it would hold the RPMs and not shut off with the switch. It just kept revving...and seemed to do it on the right cylinder cause there was no exhaust coming from the left side during this....I revved it again (snapped it) and it came back down to idle... I sprayed starting fluid around and found no leaks....i'm not blowing smoke so i figured it wasnt the crank seal. Could it be a detonation problem? I checked my compression and it was 145 on both...i'm running a VP 108 with Golden Spectro (50:1 synthetic) to play it safe cause its a new top end. There was no metal on the plugs either. The bikes temp was 130-170 all day if i went faster it cooled down...slower it would heat up. Any ideas??? I'm at a loss thanks Ed By the way the temp up there was 30-38 all day and when i sprayed starting fluid in the airbox to see what it would do, it bogged...i figured it would rev?? wesw
are your slides sticking. sounds like it when you blip the throttle it works it self loose. oh 280 mains with those mods at 300ft seem a bit lean in the first place i was at 320 i think at 1000ft with close to the same on a stocker. dajogejr
280 is about right...with an air box, depending on if the lid is on or not. I see you drilled it, but...doesn't say if it's drilled on the box or the lid (or both..) at 1700 feet that's prolly about perfect. Yeah, I think the slides are sticking too. get some fine grit sand paper, maybe 400 to 600, lightly wet sand the slides, clean the crap out of them before you put 'em back in.... Lube the throttle housing and cable while you're at it...
sschevy383
When i rejetted the carbs the slides were covered with black shit...i didnt know if that was factory or not but i'll pull them again and clean them up. Yes, my air box lid is drilled and only the lid, right through to the filter. When i was at 1700 ft i pulled my plugs to look at them and 1/2 was white, and 1/2 was brown.... 1/2 as in right down the middle.....what would cause this??? wesw
your lean at 300ft like i said. the black stuff is paint, use some scothbrite or emery paper to remove the rough edges at the bottom of the slides. you can look at the metal at the bottom of the threads to read your plug also. but i still say your lean at 300 ft. sschevy383
I'll sand down the edges to clean them up...my threads are wet with gas
ojcool
I'll sand down the edges to clean them up...my threads are wet with gas Slides sticking. Are you running pods? I have found that with pods the slides will stick alot. Pretty much every time you start the bike up. I think its condesation getting into the carbs when it cools. I dunno what else it can be. Use a prouduct called "slide and glide" its a silicone lube fixes it for a week or so. I'm going away from pod filters for this reason. The stock box really isn't that bad (with the top off). dajogejr
Tell you what....you think they stick now, put 'em on a cub motor... Yeah, mine seemed to be ok with pods on teh stock motor.....I cleaned them often though. On my cub, They stuck real, real bad....and they were clean as a whistle.... Try the sanding as Wes mentioned, not too much, just get her smooth.... Hell, if you want, you can even try to polish them a little. No problems with my 35PWKs sticking and they're chrome slides (albeit a much, MUCH better design... )
ojcool
Things get real exciting, real quick when your slides are sticking. We went to the sand drags a couple weeks ago and while we were waiting to stage I was just sitting there revving every once and a while. The line moved forward and I went to take up the slack in front of me and they stuck WIDE OPEN. Needless to say I gave the guy in front of me a little surprise when I rear ended him. I hit him HARD too. Luck for me it was one of the guys we came with and there was no damage to either bike. Didn't do it again the entire day..
