dajogejr
This is a stupid question, but try brand new spark plugs. You might have let those ones idle too long, jetting may be off, and you might have fouled 'em out.... How long has the bike been sitting? Is it possible it has old gas in it? mollett89
yes it has older gas in it but only a few weeks i shook it up pretty good could that be my problem though cuz i was planning on draining it any ways should i drain it and try again with fresh gas
dajogejr
IF the gas was pretty fresh a few weeks ago, that's not your problem. If you told me it was a few months old, then...yeah, I'd try fresh gas. To be honest, it probably wouldn't hurt to put fresh gas in...but, I don't think that'll solve the problem. Throw fresh plugs in too...
djackbanshee
i say new plugs too
mollett89
i put new plugs in whats the easiest way to check if i have spark and is there a super special way to tell if the cdi is bad or is it just buy a new one
dajogejr
No way to test the CDI that I know of. stator and Coil can be Ohm'd...but, CDI is good or bad. It's very rare a CDI will cause a bike to run poorly, normally when a CDI goes it gets NO spark at all. YOu might be overthinking this. Do you still have the TORS on? If so...disconnect them all. Chase@miamiatv has a thread with pictures on how/where to do this.....
mollett89
bike does not run at all i unpluged all the tors stuff little box, throttle and the carb tops what is the best way to test for spark?
woodro77
the best way to check for spark is to take out spark plug from cylinder and plug it into cap and touch it to bare metal of cylinder and kick , or you can unplug cap from plug and stick a screw driver into cap ond hold the metal part of screw driver 1/8 inch away from plug (so spark can jump ) and kick and watch for spark
thack
the best way to check for spark is to take out spark plug from cylinder and plug it into cap and touch it to bare metal of cylinder and kick , or you can unplug cap from plug and stick a screw driver into cap ond hold the metal part of screw driver 1/8 inch away from plug (so spark can jump ) and kick and watch for spark i got one of the in line thigs you put on your plug and plug in to your wire if it lights up when you kick its got fire if not well you do the math got it at auto zone, um this may sound stupid but ive done it . thoght i foulded a plug changed it and still not right turned out i forgot to turn on the gas duh Edited October 14, 2006 by thack
mollett89
i have an inline gas filter if that is crapped up could that be my problem i have like twenty i got from rmatv closeout for like ten cents so maybe i will replace and see if thats the prob
Screaming Yellow Zonker
i had a similar prob with my bike. I started it up and not even 20 seconds of running it just died. I replaced the stator and that didnt fix it. I replaced the coil and that didnt fix it either. The last thing to replace was the CDI and as soon as I pluged that in it took 2 kicks and it started right up. Sorry man it sounds like your CDI went out on you. I am running a GYTR which I have been told that they dont make them any more. Good luck with your prob.
428mustang
Okay, this might sound stupid, but make sure your flywheel is on. Mine did the same thing and it turned out the nut that hold the fly wheel on had come off. Also, check the gap on the CDI or what ever. You cant have a huge gap between the thing on the outside of the flywheel and the CDI thing.
dajogejr
That's a very good point, stang...the key could've sheared too...throwing the timing all off.. That's the pickup coil off the flywheel...and the gap is supposed to be .017 to .020.... CDI is the ignition box under the rear fender.... CDIs aren't that expensive, unless you go to the dealer for one. Ricky Stator has brand new CDIs for 125.00, compared to about 300 or 400 from the dealer... fastbanshee8
You might have bad spark plug boots, or a bad connection between the boots, and the wires. Unscrew the boots, cut about 1/4" off of each wire, and then screw the new boots back on. Faulty electrical components will usually quit, as they heat up. It's a cheap fix, and worth doing, if nothing else, but for piece of mind.
