Ok, took my new Shee out for it's first run yesterday. Took 10+ kicks to get it started with choke, wouldn't idle cold had to keep light pressure on the Throttle to keep it running. Finally 10 minutes later just gave up and crept off to let it finish warming up moving. Never took it past half throttle. After cruising for awhile and running it through the gears ended up at the end of the trail and had to flip a cookie, it would barely stay running in 1st gear, and I noticed a wierd smell, like super hot metal, couldn't smell coolant though. Once I finally got it turned around cruised back to the truck , ran just fine, just hates first gear. Get back to the truck and notice coolant level in the res is right at the min mark, was at the Max mark before I left. Noticed that same hot metal smell and decided to pack it in. Checked coolant level this morning and it's just below the min mark on the res.

Was riding on flat ground same elevation as the dealer I bought it from, Temp was about 69 Deg F., And never took it above *edit* half throttle. (Sorry, hasn't been to WOT yet.)

First question, is it possible I overheated the engine?

Second question, do dealers actually start these things and make sure they run before sending them out?

Third question, should I use that much coolant (From the Max mark to the Min mark on a cold engine, no signs of leaking or overflow) in about 30 minutes of riding?

Fourth question, what coolant do you guys like to run?

Any help would be much appreciated, this is my first brand new bike and I'm just a little paranoid about it.

If its a brand spankin' machine you may notice a smell to it.

As for the dealer doing a good job tuning it up before they go out, I dont think most

stealerships even give a fuck whether your atv is tuned 100%. Mine sure as hell wasnt

when I brought it home.

You should be fine with a 50/50 mix of antifreeze and distilled water.

And its better to check the actual coolant in the radiator, often.

I'd run about 2 or 3 more heat cycles through it. Let it reach normal operating temperature

then let it completely cool before really getting down on it.

Try setting the air screws in the carbs somewheres from 1.5 to 2 turns out and see how that does.

your going to smell the metal if its brand new its got to get the heat to burns off the chemicals on the outside of the metals and in the exhaust packing...

no most dealer dont test them out they just sell them, and once you break it in it will start ezer... you should have ran a few 20 min sessions on it befor riding it... help everything seat...

o dont you over heated it... and dont realy on your overflow bottle... ALWAYS check the radiator level ....

what is above full throttle? "plaid" throttle

First question, is it possible I overheated the engine?

Not likely

Second question, do dealers actually start these things and make sure they run before sending them out? No, but the carb settings are pretty much the same on a stock shee unless you are at a high elevation or really cold temps

Third question, should I use that much coolant (From the Max mark to the Min mark on a cold engine, no signs of leaking or overflow) in about 30 minutes of riding?

I would leave the coolant at the low mark, it'll just poop out the coolant untill its happy if you fill the radiator clear full and and fill the resevoir to the high mark. So yes this is normal. It wont loose anymore coolant. Check the radiator level if you are worried.

Fourth question, what coolant do you guys like to run?

engine ice

After you run through the break in tank if you want to keep using yamalube 2R mix it at 32:1 or 36:1 and change your plugs. At the end of your second tank it will run totally different (better) than it is now. Some motors break in a little slower/faster than others. When you go WOT for several seconds you'll get it cleared out and it will run better.

Whoops, meant half throttle.

K, starting a little easier now, but still won't idle when cold. Should I take it back to the dealer and make them adjust it or just write it off and do it myself. Just kinda pissed because it's brand new and all, and I have to sit there with my thumb applying light pressure for 10 minutes warming up.

depending on how cold it is where you live it wont idle when cold... you got to warm it up and its should run then...

I meant when the engine is cold, at 70 deg it won't idle with the choke. Is this normal. All of my old 2 stroke bikes would idle with the choke until the engine warmed up.

oh i read your post wrong... no it should idle with the choke pulled if its only 70 ... it when your in really cold temps that it wont idle until its warmed up... your jetting is probly off.

You need to adjust the idle screws, the ones that are on top of the box sitting on your carbs. Adjust them equally turning them clockwise untill you get a nice idle. Do this after your motor has been warmed up for about 3 minutes.
