indycar question

Recommended Posts

so, last night me and my buddy had been doing a little excessive drinking and somehow got on the topic of indycars running quarter mile times. I think an indy car would run under a 10sec quarter and my buddy thinks an indycar would run over 10 secs while using the same gearing they do for their normal tracks. at 1550lb and around 800hp, i dont see how it couldnt run under a 10. if anyone can find concrete evidence please pass it on... theres a case of beer riding on this wager.

I dunno about this one. No concrete evidence, but they are quite high geared, and you see them spin like a mofo out of the box if they lay into it.

I don't know if they could clutch it enough to get a good hole shot because they are aerodynamically suited for higher speeds with greater downforce for traction, instead of shear weight. I've heard that if they could get up to something like 130 mph, they could run the entire course if it were placed upside down.

this question defeats the purpose of a indy car tho .... its like taking a 18mm stroker with a +20 custom chassis , and wondering why he cant keep up on a mx track or jump the tripples....... Tell the indy racing league that they have to drag race. Garuntee they will come out with some preety insane setups and run low et's

Here is a good comparison the mclaren F1 fastest production car ever built until 05. I would think a indy car would better this

Ehhhh, I wouldnt compare it to a McLaren either. The f1s are built for mostly street driving, and while they are cpable of high speeds, from the factory they have to be setup for all around performance. I bet the McLaren would be faster in a quarter mile.

Doesnt Indy Car have rolling starts? I bet that their quarter mile times would be disspointing, but I'm not sure about the 10 sec. mark, I would not know.

indy does rolling starts from 55mph . the cars are built for aerodynamic's..... amazing what 1 or 2 degree differnce can do ont hose wings , at 190+mph ....... Indy is well CRAZY .... anyone who has seen indy in person will say the same thing.... 230mph sometime INCHES apart.

on Ferrari's website, there used to be a video of Michael Schumachers F1 car. (not quite indy, damn near identical)

anyway, the video was a 1/4mile pass.

dundunduuuuun

7.xxsec @ 190+mph

Indy cars dont get up to speed like F1 cars do. they are more of a top end car made for ovals.

F1 cars have 7 gears and accelerate like a motherfucker through all of them. they dont quite achieve Indy car like top speeds tho (230mph vs. ~200mph)

my guess on an Indy car would be a 1/4 time of about mid 9's @ ~150mph, all of the time made up on the top end of the track

That's not a good comparison.

Come on now, there actually isn't that much difference between a Champ Car, an IRL, and an F1 car these days.

The closest thing you'll find to a 1/4 mile test is the split time from the BAR Honda that is set up for the land speed record, and the Ferrari that is set up for basically the same thing. As a point of fact the open wheel cars that we're talking about have a very near equal weight bias, they don't transfer much weight under acceleration, and they have very high ratio first gears (compared to most things). If you tossed out a CF of .9 for the rear tires, assumed no wheel spin, then an IRL car could do an 8.37 second quater mile, mathematically, of course.

they need vastly different gear ratio for 1/4 mile running. give an f1 car the option to change gears, remove wings, and run drag slicks and it would do pretty good.

i think the suspension is WRONG for 1/4 though. how they going to launch when they have springs stiffer than a mack truck!

Theres more difference than you might think between the IRL and F1, although they are subtle. Doesn't really matter for this discussion though. But yeah, I would think they could do the 1/4 way under 10. Even if 1st gear is high, all they have to do is ride the clutch.
