Clutch adjustment out of whack?

I just picked this bike up from a guy. He said he just installed new clutch (maybe so/maybe not) anyway Ive ridden alot of bikes and atvs and this is really tough to pull back. Im just thinking that after just a half hour of riding my hand is going to look like "the claw". I tried adjusting it at the lever, after taking it all apart no problems in the line itself. I think somethings outta whack inside the clutch itself? Maybe he overtightened the springs? I have no frickin clue so I guess Im gonna have to drain the tranny and take it apart. Any and all suggestions are appreciated fellas!

Thanks in advance!

What are your mods? You might be able to get away with running half and half or even all stock springs for an easier pull. If you have too much power, the softer springs wont hold, and will let the clutch slip. I have all stock springs with a new cluch, but I'll probably do 3 and 3 next time around. (And I would have to agree with the comment you made man hands)

A dirty, worn, or clutch cable in need of lube, will be harder to pull. I'd try to lube the cable, or replace it, and see if it gets any easier to pull, before opening up the clutch. If both of those fail, then open up the clutch, and see what's going on. Just my .02.

I agree. The difference in an old corroded cable and a new one is very noticeable. Another option would be the Magura hydraulic cable. I have on w/ all HD springs and love it. Kinda pricey, though.

Hi Audrey...

If the cable is in question of frays or wear, replace it. I think they're like 12 bucks.

Remove all the parking brake crap and get a new perch with an ez pull lever. Another 30 bucks and 10 bucks for the block off plate.

If this doesn't help...you have Heavy Duty springs. If your motor is lightly modded, stock should be fine, or a mix of 3 HD and 3 stock. I put 3 of each in mine. You can't tighten down the 6 bolts for the clutch too much...they'll snap like a pretzel. 7.5 ft. lbs of torque on them. (We've probably all snapped a bolt or two on the clutch)...

HD springs are usually gold in color, thick, and tall. On my T5 piped, shaved flywheel, +4 timing bike last year, 3 and 3 lasted all year, and I'm still using the same clutch today in my 4 mil cub that is putting out 2.5 times more power than my build last year.

Thats exactly why I asked what the purpose was since this bike is bone stock. I know for sure its not the cable since we stipped the bike to the frame to check everything over and to restore it. Im sure he probably went with hd springs so I will drain just to make sure he didnt monkey anything up. Thanks for your 2 cents everyone!

You say the guy put in a new clutch? I know from experience that you can tighten the clutch spring bolts up too tight and it will make the clutch hard to pull....Also if the plates are not aligned properly around the clutch basket it will also give you problems likes this. I run EBS HD springs in my banshee and couldn't even tell the difference between stock and HD. just my .02

First....you if you over tighten the clutch bolts, and I'm talking about the ones that hold the springs down (6 of them, 10mm head) you will break them off. They WILL NOT make a difference in your clutch lever pull. They bottom out....on the inner hub. Sorry...

Aftermarket plates do not have to be aligned, only stock ones. They have a tab on the steel plates that are supposed to be rotated every 60 degrees... There are no tabs on the steels of aftermarket.

If you can't tell the difference between HD springs and stock springs, you have the grip of Popeye or the HD springs you used are junk, period. I went from a stock clutch, to 3 Barnett HD and 3 stock and noticed a difference. I went from 3/3 last year, to all 6 HD Barnett springs this year, and...yeah, even bigger difference....

You're right the socalled HD springs from EBC suck ass.The Hd springs I got from EBC didn't look or feel any different than the stockers, but with the Barnett HD springs I could see the difference in the physical appearance of the spring it is longer and alot stiffer than the stockers and you know it when you try to start the clutch bolts with Hd springs on them.I do run an easy pull clutch perch on my sons banshee and it makes a big difference.

Well, lets see 1st off i said nothing about putting the fucking king kong grip on the bolts I said over tighten them ,2nd I run tusk clutches and the plates do have the tabs. maybe the reason i cant tell a difference in the clutch pull is because im not an over egoed crying ass fucking pussy that always has to be right about everything. every post your like this and its ashame..no need for it. :shoothead:

Wow that took a turn for the worst, I for one have found a ton of his info helpful but to each his own. Is there anyway that a guy could lube the cable on his own, w/o the tool?

Unhook the clutch cable from the lever, take a ziplock bag, punch a very small hole in one of the corners of the bag, slide the cable into the hole so that the cable is about 1/4" into the bag , then wrap electrical tape or tape of choice around the bag and down the cable housing to keep oil from leaking out of the ziplock.Prop the cable up and put some oil or trans fluid { I use tri-flow } into the bag within a few mins. the oil will be coming out the bottom of the clutch cable and you have a lubed cable........................
