Banshee_19
I am about to change my transmission oil in my shee. I bought my quad used and the guy I bought it from said he was running Gear Saver, Motorcycle 80W transmission oil. Does this sound correct? and also what is everyone else running in there shee's. bansh03
Gear Saver 80wt is a great oil, I would stick with that.
knight_ripper
Lots of debate on this one. do a search on it ... and you will get major technical information. as far as Im concerned.....that oil is fine. But if you were going to switch....I use Bel-Ray 80wt. Fact...I use bel ray everything...the only liquid they dont make is coolant. good stuff. TREELIZARD
ATF type F or castrol GTX 20W50
letsgetthisdone
ATF type F or castrol GTX 20W50 uh.......no. You should not be using motor oil in a wet clutch, the ATF i don't no about. Any of the above listed oils (besides the castrol) will work good. You could also look into Maxima MTL 80wt.
LiftdT4R
uh.......no. You should not be using motor oil in a wet clutch Is this true for all wet clutches? I've always used 10w30 motor oil in all of my dirt bikes. Clymer's even calls speciically for "10w30 motor oil" to be used in the tranny in most of the yz books. I've never changed my shee's tranny oil because I tore it down once I got it. Edited August 26, 2006 by LiftdT4R
lonestar
If you want to change to a differant oil. Change you clutch friction plates. Once the plates are saturated with one type of oil stay with that oil. It's not wise to mix. If the previous owner was using that oil stay with it for the life of that clutch. DO NOT USE MOTOR OIL that's the worst thing that you can use on a clutch Edited August 26, 2006 by lonestar
TREELIZARD
Yes you can use the castrol GTX 20w50 with out any problems because it does not have the friction modifiers and its not energy conserving like most car oils. where people get into trouble is when they put a energy conserving car oil in the transmission and that is what causes the clutch to slip. check out toomeys web sight they even recommend using the castrol GTX 20w50 over bel ray 80wt. lonestar
If you using motor oil you better invest in a quick change clutch cover. Youll be in their GTX 20w50 it's still motor oil. Does it say anywhere on the bottle made for wet clutch systems 2 stroke 4 stroke transmission? NO. If it did you may have a point. I would believe the makers of or chemist that work for castrol before toomey. Toomey is pipe builder. I would believe the makers of or chemist that work for castrol before toomey. Toomey is pipe builder. I've been using it since i bought it new in 2001 and no problems. I also asked Jeff F.A.S.T racing about it when i bought my clutch from him last year and he said that the 20w50 is a great choice. not trying to sound like a smart ass or anything but you really need to under stand that the oils that contain friction modifers or that are labled energy conserving are the car oils that you cant use and the 20w50 oil doesnt have any. also there are people on here that are using shell rotella T oil in their transmissions and they swear by that. the thing is the motorcycle oil companys like maxima, motul, bel ray and spectro, want to scare the public away from any oil that is not a motorcycle specific oil so that you buy their oil at $6.00 to $7.00 per qt. thats what it all boils down to. but as i said before you can use castrol GTX 20w50 and you wont have any problems. now if you want to use a motorcycle specific oil and spend the extra money then thats your choice.
