my plastic oil dipstick (thumb part) cracked off while trying to take it out to put in new oil.. chances are it is really in there good. I've tried to get it out with plyers, screw drivers and other misc. tools, but i dont want anything going into the crankcase or stripping the treads. What is the best way to get that out without damaging anything?? any replies or ideas would help tremendously, thanks.

the stock dip stick is plastic so your not going to strip anything but that and its already broken so you need a new one any how... take the clutch cover off, to do this you might need to get an impact driver that you hit with a hammer to jar it lose. after that you can remove the dipstick with a set of pliers and you might need to get a new gasket once you pull the case.

Get a large flathead screwdriver. Use a torch to heat it really hot, then while it is still hot, push it into the plastic. Let it cool/dry and you can probably twist it right out.

Nice one...D.

Make sure you take off the side cover regardless...why chance getting pieces of plastic in your clutch, tranny, etc...for the price of a new side gasket and a couple quarts of oil...

Dave, I don;t think it is necessary. I'll be honest, I had to do what I described for this same case, and it worked great. Figure you are melting the plastic outside of the case and you let it dry again, so unless you crack the plastic, no reason to go through the trouble of taking off that cover. I say try just what I said, then what is the worst case, it doesn;t work, then you take the cover off.

Start easy and only make it as hard as it needs to be!

i live by,

Expect the worst, hope for the best! better to be safe with 20-30 bucks in oil and gasket then several hundred in clutch or gears.
