dajogejr
A few things... By hijacking the original poster's thread, which started out being a GEARING question...and you come out of left field asking about a CDI...I honestly thought you were trying to be a smart ass. So...I left a smart ass comment as well.... That being said...even though you should post your own thread elsewhere....since you hijacked this and it is TOTALLY unrelated, there is no rev limiter on a stock CDI ...or any other 2 stroke CDI for that matter...(ok...I"m sure there may be a few out there, few and far between....) The port design, compression, exhaust design, intake, fuel delivery and a few other factors dictate when the motor will stop revving. Fourstrokes, however....need a rev limiter... Often they will float valves if revved too high without the proper valvetrain installed. Hope that helps....
BillyRay
Thank you, that helps a lot. I was just trying to figure out the mph with the gearing chart that was mentioned above (the excel file) and one other chart I found after doing a search. I just did a gearing change and last weekend I ran the bike for the first time with that change. The bike was setup before with dune gearing and I wanted to set it up to do some road running here in Minnesota as we have no dunes here. I put my GPS on the bike when I did some testing last weekend and the mph were pretty close to what the chart said it should be with a final rpm of 9k. I went from a 14/43 to a 15/42 and it made a huge difference for road applications. I also have a 40 and I was trying to determine what the difference would be running that rear sprocket with a 15 front and still run 18" tires. You are correct in what you stated that CDI's do not have rev limits as I forgot about this as this is the first 2 stroke bike I have owned but can relate to what you say in relation to snowmobile CDI's. dajogejr
in relation to snowmobile CDI's. No prob....typing on a board doesn't always show attitude, sarcasm or wit....It's all good. You sled jockeys have a whole other ball to deal with, clutch engagment, cog gearing, spring rate, etc.... That's an endless loop there...but, fun as all hell. b33rs
My dune setup 12/43
la_banshee_man
naaa....its 1 on the front is equal to 2 on the back. Im running 14-41 with 22" Maxxis II's for recreation, and 15-41 with the 22's for desert racing. I back down to 13-41 with 20" ITP sandstar's for the dunes, and use 20" shredders or holeshots with 14-41 for MX. I live in Nor Cal so I need the 22" tires for clearance. Otherwise I would run 20" all the time. Id like to try some 18" rears for MX and keep the 14-41. although I could probably go to 15-41 with 18's on and keep my speed up. ALso.....do a search on here for banshee ben's gearing calculator. its an excel chart that really helped me see the changes in speed. and alowed me to understand gearing a little better. where or how did i find this banshee bens gearing calculator?.thanks
bada450r
It depends on what kind of boost bottle you have... Rebel... I'm running 14/41 now, 21 inch haulers, 72 inch rollout, starting out in 2nd for my drag racing. I'm switching to 15/41 this weekend, and gonna start out in 1st.... i was running 15/41, but change to 15/43,and i also have a cub motor, and only sand drag.when i had 15/41 i was able to shift better, and the bike felt stronger, but i had a 43,and decided to try it,it was actually harder to shift, and the bike dint pull as hard.iam crazy for having this gearing?the guy that build my motor said to run 14/43,but i think if i run that gearing ill be even harder for me to shift?[dont have override]so i guess what iam saying is what the best gearing to your knowledge for draging up sand hills? also i start in second gear
