LiftdT4R
Ok, went to re-pack my FMF power cores on my shee, and yz today. The shees silencers are 2.5 yrs. old,a nd have never been repacked, as soon as I took them apart, the core broke right off of the actual tube leading into the silencer. I guess my question is why did this happen? The silencer was packed from FMF, and the packing didn't look that bad at all. I don't mind spending the 160 for new silencers, if it was my fault, and if it was I don't want it to happen again. I know it probably is somehow, this is the first 2 stroke I've owned that I have worked on, so I'm still a little lost on some of this stuff. A pic is below, and any input would be greatly appreciate. Edit: Upon firther inspection, the whole core is very brittle, and will crush if it is squeezed. Every thing I know says that it must have gotten too hot at one point or another, but the jetting has always been perfect(per plug chop), and the bike has always run perfect, for as long as the silnecers have been on. Again, any insight would be very helpful. Edited August 15, 2006 by LiftdT4R
dajogejr
Between all the heat and oil, it just took it's toll on those brittle screens. Before I bought new silencers, I'd clean and degrease the hell out of 'em...and take it to a welding shop. Probably not enough metal to weld...but, you only need a tack here and there. Or...you can try brazing them....don't need as much heat. 20 bucks spent there is easier than footing the bill for new ones... Just a thought. The one core, in the picture is now shot, I crushed most of it, the other one appears to be fine, and I have never seen just the cores for sale. I'm gonna grab new silencers I guess, the old ones were fairly rusted, any suggestions on a more durable silencer?
Bansh88
I repacked my FMFs last year. What a fuckin nightmare. I'll never do it again. Not worth the trouble or mess.

Fawkin' great, time to switch I guess, Just pisses me off, because the muffler on my yz has to be 9+ years old, and I've repacked it twice, whoever had it before me must have done it, and I have never had a problem. This just sucks, for 2.5 year old silencers, this shouldnt be, and it's not like I abused them or ran them hot either. Ohh well, guess I'll have to look at other silencers. And the cores were ok on yours? They werent brittle, and didnt break or anything? Maybe I went too long without repacking htem, but I thought 2.5 yrs. wasnt bad at all. jbooker82
I dont see why fmf doesnt make them out of stainless steel. I would think that would solve the problem.
Bansh88
yet another reason I think Toomeys are superior. A T5 silencer can be easily disasembled. FMF is riveted together
djackbanshee
fmf silencers break like that when they get low on wool, the screen vibrates and brakes off. Keeping them always full with wool keeps them from breaking.

FMF is riveted together Do you know if it is possible to use the T5 silencer with FMF headers, I like the Gnarlys, they are great for the woods and trails, but you are correct, the Power Core sucks, the rivets are a pain in the ass, and the core also sucks. fmf silencers break like that when they get low on wool, the screen vibrates and brakes off. Keeping them always full with wool keeps them from breaking. Whenever I do them, I always pack 'em good. I ass u me d this one was good too because it came from FMF like that. I'll be extra careful if I do them again though. Thanks for the info.

FMF is riveted together I would run toomeys to if they had a desent spark arrestor. I am not really a fan of the clamp on spark arrestors. Hell I can get a pice of steel screen and clamp it on with a hose clamp.

They also make those that acutally replace the factory end cap. remove the snap ring and put them in place... I had clamp ons last year for my Toomey's...and I"m gonna reuse them for my RDZ pipes...you gotta run what you gotta run!

I might have to look in to the spark arrestors that replace the end cap. I dont know if going from SST's to toomys would be worth the cost though. I love Toomey pipes...but, it's hard to justify the cost for just a stupid silencer... The problem is...after you drive around and try to get it welded...which, you're not sure how it's gonna turn out anyways, you might have better saved your time buying a new silencer... Sorry...Josh...you're in a shitty spot indeed.... Good luck to ya...
